Summary
Assists with interpreting, translating and tutoring in all subject areas to limited English proficient students and parents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
*Functions as a liaison between school administrators, counselors, teachers and bilingual students by interpreting communications within the school and with the parents.
*Translates notes, forms, and letters to a specific home language.
*Assists students in the development of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in their first or second language.
*Tutors the content area concepts in the native language in an individual or group setting.
*Coordinates with the ESL department and/or content teachers in arranging a schedule of native language content area tutoring.
*Administers test for native language literacy proficiency.
*Assists the teacher in maintaining discipline and a classroom climate conducive to learning.
*Attends appropriate professional development conferences and meetings as requested by the ESL department.
*Assists in the necessary record keeping required by the school and the ESL department.
*Assists the teacher in coordinating parent volunteer activities.
*Abides to the Code of Ethics for interpreters and translators.
*Performs assigned limited non-instructional duties such as lunchroom supervision, playground supervision, bus duty and other tasks assigned by the principal, as long as it does not interfere with instructional time.
*Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Must meet definition of highly qualified status by earning 48 college credit earned hours that includes 15 hours of general education requirements such as English Composition (3), English/Reading (6) and Mathematics (6), obtaining an Associate's Degree from an accredited university or college, or by passing the Paraprofessional Exam with a score of 450 or above. The paraprofessional must also be certified as an interpreter or translator.
