PRIMARY FUNCTION: SCCPSS Campus Police Department's School Resource Officer Trainee Program is for applicants who are not a certified police officer through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST). Selected candidates must complete the POST certified Basic Law Enforcement Course, an 11-week program conducted at a Police Academy that includes classroom Instruction, field training exercises and a rigorous physical fitness regimen. After graduating, the candidate will be a certified police officer/school resource officer (SRO) for SCCPSS.

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Education Level:
  • High school diploma OR GED with six months experience in a similar role.
  • Prior to employment with SCCPSS Campus Police, the applicant must be able to pass a Pre-Physical Abilities Test administered by Campus Police.
  • After employment with SCCPSS Campus Police but prior to acceptance into the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training council (POST) Basic Law Enforcement Course, the applicant must pass a Physical Abilities Test administered by the POST.
  1. Experience, Skill, and Certification:
  • Eligible to become Certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training council (POST) as a police officer
  • MUST complete the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) Police Academy certification as a police officer within 1 year of training starting date
  • Police academy or training in specific areas of security procedures and investigation
  • Demonstrate ability to operate emergency equipment, weapons, and motor vehicles
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain crowd control
  • Demonstrate ability to work rapidly and accurately with names, codes, and symbols
  • Demonstrate ability to prepare accurate and concise written reports
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain security of confidential materials
  • Demonstrate ability to judge when to act independently and when to refer situations to supervisor
  • Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, parents, and public
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic law to include criminal and civil statues
  • Demonstrate knowledge of police procedures, Criminal Code of Georgia, Juvenile Court Code, and Basic Law Enforcement
  • Demonstrate ability to work with principals, administrators, and other school personnel regarding juvenile or adult offense and to arbitrate for restitution
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  1. Enforces regulations and procedures to assure the safety of district property, personnel, and students.
  2. Responsible for maintaining high visibility on school campus to safeguard district property, maintains safety of students and staff.
  3. Investigates incidents related to burglary, theft, arson, malicious mischief, criminal trespass, and assaults and writes appropriate reports.
  4. Interviews, apprehends, arrests, transports, books, and advises suspects of certain constitutional rights.
  5. Responds to silent alarm calls and fire alarm calls to determine cause and take appropriate action.
  6. Conforms to prescribed safety standards.
  7. Performs other duties as necessary for the safe and effective operation of the school and district.
Preemployment Requirements:
  1. Background Investigation with Polygraph, Psychological and Medical Exam.
  2. Criminal History Record and Sex Offender Registry Checks
  3. Drug Test
  4. Maintain a valid Georgia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a paid training program for the purpose of becoming eligible for full time employment as a Certified School Resource Officer. This is a temporary training agreement for the entire training program and cannot exceed one (1) year. Flat training fee is $15.00 per hour. No more than 40 hours in any one week without approval from the Command Staff.

OFFICE Employees in this category are normally exposed to a typical environment. The employee has some control over the length of time sitting, standing, or ambulating. There are occasions that require the lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies, as well as bending, stooping, or stretching. There is frequent use of computers, telephone, and other standard office equipment, which includes reading, listening, writing, or speaking. There are few exceptional physical or sensory demands.

Long periods of seated travel by car between locations will be required. There may be prolonged periods of standing and walking. Incumbents carry firearms and must be willing to use them if necessary, upon receiving certification.
