Job Description:

The Blake School seeks to hire a full-time Social Studies teacher capable of teaching a range of American and globally-themed history and social science courses in our Upper School. This is a 1.0 FTE ongoing position starting in the 2022-23 school year. The successful candidate will create a rigorous, supportive and differentiated classroom environment and demonstrate strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills. The department is committed to developing student engagement and participation in discussion-based courses using inquiry approaches to history and the social sciences.

A full course load consists of four classes each semester, comprising one to three courses, depending on department need. Full-time Upper School faculty also serve as advisors, chaperone student events and participate in department and divisional meetings and committees. We value an interest in advising student clubs, coaching athletic teams and other avenues of sharing passions with students that build on the school's commitment to pluralism and community. This is a benefits-eligible position.

Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experiences and expertise that make our department and community strong and empower students to engage across differences and explore a wide range of topics. Blake provides substantial resources for professional learning in areas including adolescent development, learning differences and intercultural competence. We welcome candidates who have non-traditional experience as educators.

The committee will begin the review of applications in December with the intent of inviting finalists to campus as early as late January. Blake will typically cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.

Experience and Skills:

The ideal candidate will have a college degree in history or a field in the social sciences (advanced degree or work toward an advanced degree preferred) and preferably at least two years of classroom experience at the secondary level or as the teacher of record in early undergraduate courses. References should speak to the candidate's enthusiasm for working effectively with adolescents and the ability to work harmoniously and competently with colleagues.

The Blake School is a pre-kindergarten through grade 12, co-educational, nonsectarian, independent day school enrolling 1,366 bright, talented students from nearly 56 Twin Cities-area communities. Founded in 1900, The Blake School has the advantage of facilities and campuses designed for specific developmental ages. Blake's mission is to engage students with a dynamic, academically challenging education in a diverse and supportive community committed to pluralism and a common set of values. Students pursue an integrated program of academic, artistic and athletic activities, preparing for college, lifelong learning and purposeful lives as community and global citizens. The school community is also guided by its Commitment to Pluralism and core values.

The Blake School believes that a diverse society enriches all individuals and communities. Diversity of race, ethnicity, national origin, geography, religion, gender, affectional or sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and marital, parental or economic status forms the fabric of our society. As a result of these beliefs, The Blake School actively seeks students, families and employees who value and contribute to the fullness of a diverse community within the context of its mission. In doing so, we recognize our responsibility to help make each person's experience a success. EOE
