SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs technical and skilled journey level electrical duties in the installation and repair of electrical circuits, systems and equipment; performs preventative maintenance and servicing to electrical motors and equipment and functions in a lead capacity over other skilled workers and assistants. Incumbent performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Electrician II classification differs from the Electrician I classification in that the former performs journey level electrical installation, troubleshooting and repair duties that are specialized, technical and complex in nature as well as functions in a lead capacity.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Takes responsibility for and performs complex, technical and skilled electrical duties; repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment, such as motors, lighting circuits, electrical control equipment, transformers, wiring, switches, and alarm systems; uses a variety of test instruments to locate and determine electrical malfunction; troubleshooting and repair duties that are specialized, technical and complex in nature as well as functions in a lead capacity.

Oversees and coordinates work assignments; Obtaining project quotes from vendors; preparing and maintaining related operational records and reports; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Estimates costs and materials; provides technical assistance to and assists workers in performance of duties; maintains inventory of spare parts and supplies; maintains operational and inventory records and files; obtains necessary permits; provides technical assistance and assists workers in performance of duties; and instructs others in use, maintenance and repair of all related equipment; reviews completed work by District personnel and outside contractors for compliance with specifications, plans and codes.

May be required to physically perform AHERA Class III disturbances to asbestos containing building materials as directed in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. May be required to physically perform OSHA lead remediation in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. May be required to physically perform mold remediation in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  1. Five (5) years of responsible journey level experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems;

OR
  1. Completion of a recognized two (2) year electrical apprenticeship program;

AND
  1. Three (3) years of journey level experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems.

Knowledge of: Tools and methods used in electrical installation and repair work; electrical terms and materials; circuits used in buildings; single- and poly-phase motors; kitchen, heating, ventilation and blower equipment; portable hand tools, stationary power tools and distribution systems; National Electrical Code and the Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety; electrical blueprints; and test equipment such as ohmmeters, monitors, voltmeters, etc.

Skill at: Working independently; using electrical tools, test instruments and other equipment skillfully and safely; understanding and carrying out verbal and written instructions; communicating effectively in directing the work of others; reading, understanding and working from blueprints, plans and specifications for electrical work; maintaining simple records and files; maintaining operational reports; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; computer skills in Microsoft Office Products, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Special Requirements: Applicants may be required to pass a physical and a full-mask or half-mask respirator fit test. Under this requirement the employee may not be able to have certain facial hair, like a beard, long sideburns, or mustache that may interfere with the passing of the fit test and may be required to do minor attachment to and penetration of asbestos containing materials.

Physical Demands: This work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequently climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 60 pounds, pushing balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching, crawling in restricted areas. . Must have the ability to enter all areas of a facility including attics and crawl spaces. To some extent, the frequency or intensity of physical exertion must also be considered.

Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada State Operator's license with a driving record acceptable to the District, and applicable local electrical licenses.

Certification: AHERA 16 hour asbestos training. Asbestos certification may be required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training.

Certification: OSHA Lead Action Training. Certification may be required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

This is a 40 hour per week, 260 day position.

Eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses, and Credit Union benefits; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 20 to 24.75 hours per week received PERS retirement benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses and Credit Union benefits listed below; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive the benefits listed below, with the exception of Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the District.
Holiday: Eligible employees receive up to eleven (11) paid holidays each year. Vacation: Eligible employees receive up to twenty (20) days of paid vacation each year. Sick Leave: Eligible employees receive up to fifteen (15) days of paid sick leave each year. Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance: Eligible employees may select an insurance plan wherein WCSD contributes 100% of insurance premiums. Eligible employee paid dependent medical insurance is available for an employee's dependents. Insurance Premiums - Summer Months: WCSD contributes 100% of the district paid portion of eligible employee's insurance premiums for employees who are not scheduled to work in the summer. Life Insurance: The District contributes 100 % of employee's life insurance premiums. Salary Increases: In addition to any negotiated increases each year, eligible employees receive salary increases each July, for the first fifteen (15) years of employment. Longevity Bonuses: Eligible employees receive annual bonuses as follows: 12-14 years of employment, $700; 15-17 years of employment, $1, 000; 18 + years of employment, $1, 100. Credit Union: Outstanding benefits are available through the Credit Union.

No State Income Tax. No Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more. Retirement benefit offered is the State of Nevada retirement system, Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), which is one of the best in the country.

PERS ELIGIBLE POSITIONS:

Eligible Employees who select the employer paid salary schedule (Schedule A) will have Washoe County School District (WCSD) contribute 100% of the employee's retirement contributions. Eligible employees who select the employer-employee paid salary schedule (Schedule B) will have a portion of the legislatively designated amount paid by WCSD to PERS for retirement benefits and the employee, in turn, will pay the remaining portion of the legislatively designated amount of his/her salary to PERS. These options are introduced and explained in detail during the New Employee Orientation upon selection for employment.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
