SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under supervision keeps assigned building area clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly; and secures rooms and cleaning stations. Incumbent performs related duties as required.

Position assignments are normally evening, part time, and typically open for traditional school year with flexible work days and site assignments.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Sweeps, mops, scrubs floors including surfaces of many types; vacuums rugs and carpets; dusts, washes furniture and woodwork, fixtures, shelves, cupboards and counters; cleans walls and whiteboards; cleans and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms and showers; fills soap and paper dispenser; empties trash and waste cans; and restocks supplies. Insures all doors and windows in assigned area are locked.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Substitute Custodian classification differs from the standard Custodian classification in that the former performs basic cleaning custodial duties under the guidelines of Process Cleaning; other duties that are less complex and technical in nature as performed by the Custodial classification; and does not routinely perform duties related to basic grounds and indoor/outdoor maintenance. The former classification normally is off without pay during fall break, winter break, spring break, and the summer break. The former classification also works at multiple district sites on flexible days as opposed to the Custodial classification that is assigned permanently to a District site.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

1. Six (6) months of experience demonstrating reliability, responsibility and good work habits.

Knowledge of: Reading, writing and basic arithmetic sufficient to perform job duties successfully; and cleaning materials, methods and equipment.

Skill at: Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; learning supplies, equipment, SDS instructions, and prescribed methods of cleaning; performing strenuous physical work; working effectively under time limitations and without immediate supervision; working under occasional adverse environmental situations, such as heat, cold, dust and fumes; climbing and working from ladders; making simple arithmetic calculations; and developing working relationships with those contacted in course or work.

Special Considerations: The position is limited to no more than 1,039 hours annually ending June 30th within a fiscal year. No other district paid position can be held while working in this position.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters and record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average ability and dexterity.

Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

Additional Job Information :

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
