Job Description / Essential Elements: MILPITAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SCIENCE SPECIALIST - ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT: Elementary School REPORTS TO: Principal APPROVED: SALARY SCHEDULE: Certificated Teachers BASIC FUNCTION: Provides a science educational program for all school site fourth through sixth graders which would fulfill the state framework and district states philosophy, goals and or objectives. Serves as a resource in the area of science to all school site primary teachers (K-3). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. Establishes and maintains a science lab which promotes and enhances education, health and welfare of its students. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive, safe classroom environment. Takes any and all measures necessary to safeguard classroom equipment and furniture. Promotes and fosters the concepts of safety in handling science equipment. Delivers and maintains those instructional programs as outlined by state, district and school curriculum guidelines for grades 4-6. Determines current students needs; develops and delivers a program that meets these needs for grades 4-6. Teaches grades 4-6 students skills and attitudes necessary to be successful in "lab" experiences and to foster and enhance the students' enjoyment of science. Assists the K-3 classroom teacher in delivering and maintaining those instructional programs as outlined by state, district and school curriculum guides through team teaching and planning and making appropriate lab materials available for use. Fosters and enhances K-3 students' enjoyment of science. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor 's degree with academic major or minor in the area of science or equivalent post-college classes in science. ABILITIES: ABILITY TO: Read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Science Specialist - Elementary - continued Page 2 ABILITIES (continued): ABILITY TO: Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program. Plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Speak clearly and concisely in oral and written communication. Work with staff, parents and students. Maintain professional competence through active participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth.
