Under the direction of the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, The Supervisor of Reading is responsible for providing leadership and support for district-wide reading development and will be responsible for full implementation of these programs as outlined in the responsibilities described below.

The Supervisor of Reading will lead the vision and work for district-wide adherence to and implementation of Rhode Island's Right to Read Act. The Supervisor of Reading works closely with the Supervisor of Pre-K Literacy and Supervisor of K-12 Literacy.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership for district-wide reading programming inclusive of standards-based Reading curriculum development, resource selection, and staff development including summer and after school programs;Develop plans for and implement a multi-tiered professional learning program to ensure district teachers achieve a level of proficiency in or awareness of the knowledge and practices of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy.Develop a program of professional learning in the knowledge and practices of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy specifically for Teaching Assistants and Instructional Assistants.Play a leadership role in the design and implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports;Participates in the selection and evaluation process for department staff; provides the necessary administrative and supervisory function for appropriate leadership of the department staff including Reaching coaches and instructional assistants; uses creative and critical thinking in curriculum work, staff management, and problem-solving;Coordinates proven, research-based methods, expertise in the science of reading and strategies for curriculum reform; collects and analyzes data to improve products and services delivered to schools to support student achievement; provides leadership in designing and developing new programs and initiatives to meet identified needs.Develop a formalized, age specific, intervention plan to address the reading-related learning needs of students who are three (3) or more years behind grade level.Coordinate the design, support and implementation of quality professional development programs in Reading for principals, coaches, teachers, and support staff consistent with district, state required and national standards for professional development;Monitor the quality of implementation of the Reading programs and initiatives in classrooms and extended learning;Serves as district liaison to Reading curriculum vendors.Establishes collaborative relationships with other divisions in PPSD and RI Department of Education that support the mission of the department;Collaborate with Supervisors to identify and coordinate targeted school-based support to improve reading instruction; with the Office of Special Education and the Office of English Language Learners to design, coordinate, and implement innovative reading programs that support the special needs of these student populations;Collaborate with the Office of Research, Planning and Evaluation, to evaluate and recommend appropriate assessment to ensure timely screening, diagnosis and progress monitoring for students;Collaborate with the Office of parent engagement to establish quality programs for parents that support reading development, and provide leadership for establishing community and university partnerships that support and expand outreach of literacy initiatives to the broader community;Ensure that District initiatives comply with state standards and federal guidelines;Develops and presents information and programs to professional staff groups and community groups; works with community and school groups to build knowledge of effective curriculum and instruction practices; articulates PPSD vision and goals to a range of audiences and stakeholders.Assist in the development and management of budgets to support and maintain quality district reading and library media arts programing;Negotiate and manage contracts with partners supporting the reading initiatives in the district;Provides professional development, training and general oversight of the work of reading coaches, reading specialists and library media specialistsWorks closely and collaboratively with Supervisor of Pre-K Literacy and Supervisor of K-12 LiteracyPerform other functions as assigned by the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning

Salary Rate Range
$107,811 - $115,633

RIDE Requirements
District Level Administrator - Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and/or Building Level Administrator and one or more of the following:

Reading Specialist/Consultant

ESL Preferred

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the areas of the science of reading, dyslexia, literacy, curriculum and instruction and/or administration/educational leadership;5 years outstanding teaching or related experience in Reading and English Language Arts preferred.Administrative or supervisory experience desirable.Successful recent leadership experiences in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Experience in test development, curriculum development, and grant writing desirable.Experience with computers and instructional technology application.Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.5 years of successful leadership experience (building leader/principal, assistant principal, and/or instructional coach)Significant K-12 urban leadership experience in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Knowledge of research-based curriculum, instruction and assessment practices.Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change quickly and meet deadlines.Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative.Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work.Commitment to the belief that all students can learn, to educational equity, and to the PPSD visionYou must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employmentBilingual PreferredSelected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
