Essex Westford School District is seeking an experienced instructional assistant/teacher to tutor a student at Albert D. Lawton middle school.

The tutor will provide instruction and support 1:1 in academic subject areas as part of a 504 Plan or other temporary accommodation. The position is available on a temporary basis for 2-3 hours per day, until the accommodation is no longer needed. Schedule and lo0cation may be flexible.

Responsibilities include the following:
  • Plan and prepare lessons under the oversight of the classroom teacher/school administrator, including: choosing materials at appropriate levels for student, preparing lesson plans and objectives, and researching and/or creating instructional materials as needed.
  • Provide direct instruction to students; tutor students individually under the direction/oversight of the classroom teacher
  • Assess student progress, preparing written documentation as required
  • Meet with parent(s) or guardian(s), independently or with classroom teacher/school administrator, to discuss student progress and needs, explain the course curriculum, etc.
  • Meet regularly with 504 Coordinator and/or school administrator to plan, coordinate and evaluate instructional activities, review student progress, and consult about concerns.
Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or other appropriate discipline, with several years of directly related training/experience in tutoring or instructing students.
  • Good understanding of the developmental needs of school-aged students; and the ability to show patience, respect and compassion in working with students. Experience with middle school age students desired.
  • Ability to effectively manage students one-on-one.
  • Ability to recognize and curtail potential dangers including environmental hazards and behavioral aggression/hostility.
  • Strong background in the content of math, language arts, science, and social studies. Good understanding of the concepts relevant to the grade level being tutored, and ability to apply these concepts.
  • Ability to problem solve and develop skill building activities for the grade level being served.
  • Great oral and written communication skills.
  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to work independently without direct oversight.
  • Proficient knowledge and skills with various computer applications including: Google Suite and e-mail. Strong technical knowledge to operate computers. Proven ability to effectively instruct others in the use of these applications and programs.
