Job Description

Behavior Intervention Specialist

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

This position provides behavioral supports to students in the classroom and school setting using social emotional supports and positive behavior intervention strategies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Conducts interviews with students and parents/guardians upon intake for assessment purposes. Collects observational data in classroom settings. Develops Behavioral Intervention Plans for each student.

•Shares Behavioral Intervention Plan with student, parents/guardians and assigned staff members. Works with involved parties to establish goals, expectations and consequences. Develops a social contract for parent(s) and student. Monitors progress/adherence to social contract/Behavioral Intervention Plan by student and parent(s)/guardian(s).

•Works with at-risk youth to modify unacceptable behavior and to develop and implement strategies to be used in dealing with stressors/triggers once the student has successfully re-entered his/her home school.

•Assists the student in focusing on achievement of Behavior Intervention Plan goals through utilization of appropriate intervention strategies. Meets periodically with students to provide feedback regarding progress made and suggested tactics to enhance accomplishment of behavioral plan objectives.

•Coordinates group sessions and activities designed toward the development of appropriate interactions to various situations/settings.

•Implements Positive Behavior Intervention strategies in individual and group settings.

•Develops and presents group and individual exercises with students to emphasize making appropriate choices. Works with students on an individual basis as needed to reinforce appropriate choices regarding behavior.

•Implements appropriate intervention strategies in classroom and individual settings by modeling direct intervention with students. Assists staff members with implementing intervention strategies by providing instruction and guidance regarding accepted and appropriate methods.

•Demonstrates and models appropriate intervention strategies/techniques to facilitate transfer of knowledge to classroom staff, parents, and tutors. Serves as a resource for faculty/staff regarding appropriate intervention strategies.

•Exercises sound judgment in appraising behavioral situations. Develops and refers appropriate recommendations regarding necessary actions to be taken.

•Supports School Administration in responding to parent questions/concerns with respect to assessments, development of behavior plans, etc. for student.

•May make home visits to provide support to parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding reinforcement of student Behavioral Intervention Plan.

•Collects data for referral process to applicable external agencies when appropriate.

•Provides school administration with analysis and reports on program objectives and achievements.

•Supports school administration with administrative duties by returning phone calls and e-mails and collecting data on services provided.

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

•Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions.

•Effective communication in English, in both written and verbal forms. Use of proper grammar and vocabulary. Ability to adapt communication level to audiences (students, parents/guardians, staff members) of varying comprehension levels.

•Superior organizational skills.

•Ability to use personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet functions, e-mail and internet research purposes.

•Experience and proficiency in data collection.

•Demonstrated proficiency in teaching and using behavioral strategies and techniques.

•Following system-provided training, demonstrated proficiency in appropriate restraint of a child whose actions might result in harming/injuring himself or others, or in damaging property.

•Works in a caring and cooperative fashion with students, school staff, and the Director. Demonstrates sound judgment in interactions with students, staff, parents, tutors, and school staff.

•Ability to develop, implement and monitor student's Behavior Intervention Plan.

•Physical ability to work with active children. Duties may require physical exertion such as lifting, running, and making quick movements.

Job Qualification

Pay Grade 65 | Full-Time | 10 Months | Minimum Monthly Salary $2,889

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

•Minimum: Bachelor's degree in relevant social sciences field. Experience with Positive Behavior Support. Significant experience in working with at-risk students and/or children with behavioral problems

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid and up-to-date driver's license
