JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Theater Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

PAY GRADE: Classroom Teacher salary scale

PRIMARY PURPOSE :

The Theater Teacher is responsible for implementing the Theatre Arts instructional program including curricular and extracurricular activities in keeping with the District's educational philosophies, policies, procedures and programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned

Preferred:

  • At least one year of student teaching or approved internship

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of subjects assigned
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability of instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Organizes the instruction of theater arts.
    • Plans curriculum that includes theatre history, performance, characterization and the technical and production aspects of theater.
    • Provides opportunities for students to use their knowledge of drama.
    • Directs play of professional quality to be performed for the general public.
    • Directs a one-act play to be used in University Interscholastic League One-Act Play competition.
    • Sponsors a local troupe of the International Thespian Society.
    • Supervises students during all rehearsals and performances.
    • Plans a method of evaluation for students.
  • Administers the operation of the drama program.
    • Coordinates all activities with the building calendar and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.
    • Assumes responsibility for budgeting, requisitioning and accounting for all drama funds and activity money.
    • Communicates with parents regarding activities scheduled for drama students.
    • Advises administration of accomplishments in competitions.
  • Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
    • Promotes community understanding of the drama program through communication with parents, concern for students and presentation of attractive public performances.
    • Remains current in the area of theater education through professional organizations, literature, workshops and in-service programs.
  • Complies with the position description for the classroom teacher.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require both traveling within the district and state wide. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

That number will change soon with the construction of several new facilities – including two middle schools, three ninth-grade centers and a state-of-the-art stadium that will serve the entire district – all funded by a bond referendum approved by voters in 2016.
