Primary Purpose - Provide strategic leadership for the overall communications and community relations efforts including internal communications, external communications, media relations, and social media that builds understanding and goodwill for Brenham Independent School District. Assist with preparation of written materials for district publications. Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or experience in a related field


Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in social media
  • Strong Organization and communication
  • Ability to write press release scripts for public presentations, copy for District brochures, and marketing publications
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, parents, or the public
  • Ability to work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, and staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district
  • Thorough knowledge of media relations and public relations functions
  • Ability to use software to develop spreadsheets, perform data analysis, and do word processing
  • Knowledge of Texas Public Information Act


Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Provide strategic leadership for the development and execution of both proactive and reactive district-wide communications plans.
  • Strive to model and promote the Vision and values of the school district.
  • Research and develop strategies for the continuous improvement of community engagement.
  • Serve as a liaison between the district, the community, and the media to promote a positive image for the District.
  • Coordinate and oversee the day-to-day media relations activities and crisis communications both responsive and proactive.
  • Advise the superintendent and leadership team on a variety of media issues including any potential controversial information regarding the District.
  • Review all media outlets daily for consistency and accuracy in reporting, to ensure that the integrity of the District's message is maintained.
  • Utilize and present data that demonstrates effectiveness of district communication efforts.
  • Direct the production and distribution of news releases, arrangement of news conferences as required: and preparation of information for distribution to news media.
  • Attend meetings and work sessions of the Board of Trustees, as well as other meetings and events as needed.
  • Communicate regular school news to appropriate media.
  • Identify and develop new avenues for new District distribution.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing District events.
  • Develop and implement successful marketing strategies and materials to promote the District.
  • Model high standards of professional integrity and maintain the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Provide and manage content for the District's website and social media pages.
  • Design, prepare, and edit district publications including newsletters, recruitment brochures, programs for special events, and other publications.
  • Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs including speaking at civic organization meetings and making presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
