BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Hold an associate degree or the equivalent of two years of college, or successful completion of Parapro assessment or higher.
  2. Have demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents.
  3. Possess general knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the classroom, particularly in the area of teaching literacy.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

To provide supplemental tutoring, under the direction of the school's reading specialist, to students identified as needing additional support in foundational literacy skills.

PALS is a state-provided diagnostic tool funded through Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI). The purpose of the screening is to help school divisions with early detection of reading problems and to ensure that all students are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade.

PALS results are used to (a) identify students in need of additional instruction based on their Entry Level task scores, (b) diagnose specific skill deficits in students whose Entry Level scores do not meet grade-level criteria and, (c) provide teachers with explicit information to help guide instruction. Students who are identified through the screening receive 2.5 hours of additional reading instruction per week.

DIMENSIONS:

An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work at the school.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Follows the direction of the reading specialist in planning for the instructional needs of the identified PALS students.
  2. Plans, with support, and delivers small group instruction to students identified by the PALS screening.
  3. Uses appropriate curriculum and intervention resources that support remediation efforts.
  4. Attends training sessions as appropriate.
  5. Documents intervention efforts, supports schoolwide PALS assessments and progress monitoring of identified students.
  6. Communicates student progress to classroom teachers, staff, administration and parents as appropriate.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.
