  • Experience providing leadership in high school settings relative to supporting successful academic and social outcomes.

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of the Multicultural Services Coordinator is to confront the barriers that students of color face in high school by providing linkages to opportunities and by directly supporting students to participate in academics, academic enrichment, youth groups and community based activities that prepare them to be college, career and community ready.

The primary focus of the role is to work with African American students. The role also builds bridges with other students of color (and/or adult advisors). This position helps to create and sustain the conditions in a high school that promote the academic success, positive identity and overall well being of students. Key activities may be aligned to the School Improvement Plan, specifically when there are sub-groups identified in focus areas. Key activities will be aligned to the priorities of the Equity and Engagement Office, especially related to family partnership, youth voice and community engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

School Level Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve on the School Based Leadership team and provide input on the instructional and non-instructional strategies that will impact students of color. When appropriate, serve on sub-committees to work on projects that will enhance the goals and monitoring of the School Improvement Plan.
  • Help to coordinate a Family Engagement team within the building to implement Family and Community Engagement (FACE) strategies as outlined in the School Improvement Plan. Conduct outreach to African American families and work with other staff who convene Multicultural parent nights/groups to ensure that family and school connections are strong.
  • Work with Assistant Principals and Counseling staff to work directly with individual students who may be in need of more support. When appropriate, manage a small caseload of higher-need students, not to exceed 5 students per semester.
  • Work with counseling staff to nominate students for the Urban League of Greater Madison's MLK Jr. Student Recognition Breakfast, the Madison Metropolitan Links Annual African American Student Recognition and any scholarship opportunities targeted to students of color.
  • Serve as the Advisor for the Black Student Union. Develop youth leadership by engaging students to attend meetings and plan activities that allow them to have agency in the group. Support student activities as outlined by the BSU. Work collaboratively with Minority Student Coordinators at other high schools to engage in the development of BSUs as a strategic way to address Youth Leadership across the district.
  • Support additional school needs as designated by the Principal and Assistant Principal as part of school strategies to foster a sense of belonging and wellbeing for students of color, not to exceed 4 hours per week.
Equity and Engagement Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and support 2-3 students annually to participate in the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) conference and student project. Serve as a chaperone to the conference, convene meetings with students to design and support their project, communicate progress with the Principal and Office of Equity and Engagement. A final student presentation may also be scheduled.
  • Nominate students to participate in groups or opportunities sponsored by Equity & Engagement to elevate BIPOC youth voice at the district level
  • Plan an annual college tour, with an emphasis on Historically Black Colleges. This should be in collaboration with Minority Student Coordinators at the other schools. Submit a timeline and work plan to the Principal and Office of Equity, Partnerships and Engagement; complete all required paperwork in a timely fashion; submit and manage a budget for field trip revenue and expenses; write grants and determine fundraising goal; set criteria for student eligibility for trip; hold information session for parents and ensure there are chaperones for the trip. Write a 1-2 page report of the trip and submit it to the Office of Equity, Partnerships and Engagement.
  • Align up to four college/career field trips per year and arrange guest speakers with Academic Career Plans (ACP) efforts in the school. Determine campuses that will offer college tours and arrange visits and work in partnership with Madison College to recruit and take students to the annual College/Career Fairs. Attend planning meetings as assigned and/or needed.
  • Work with community agencies to increase access to community services, which may include organizing opportunities for them to come in and meet with students.
  • Attend regular team meetings of the department. Respond to requests and deadlines that come from the Chief of High Schools, Office of Secondary Programs and Pathways, and the Office of Equity & Engagement.
