Start date: January 10, 2022

The Opportunity:

Facing History and Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to bigotry and hate. Facing History seeks a dedicated senior leader for a new role that will support the implementation of an ambitious programmatic strategy designed to bring our high-quality, effective program to exponentially more teachers. Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Executive Program Director, Strategic Program Implementation (EPD-SPI) will supervise a team of regionally-based, experienced program directors who are responsible for delivering strategically-aligned programming that responds to local needs. The success of our refined strategy depends on collaborative, outcomes-oriented relationships between the EPD-SPI and other senior leaders, both within and beyond the Program team.

Who you are:

You are an exceptional leader who is passionate about our mission and excited to support teachers as they help students make sense of the world and have an impact on their communities. You are excited to identify opportunities - with local staff and partners - for implementation of our model in communities across the United States.

You have a track record not only of developing programmatic strategy but also implementing that strategy on the ground. You are a strategic thinker who has extensive experience translating big-picture vision into practical, immediate, local contexts. You have significant success working closely with and in schools and districts. You constantly seek to understand the communities, histories, challenges, and opportunities that help shape any given landscape and the people within them. You have demonstrated a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as critical components of strategy development and execution as well as key aspects of team culture and dynamics. You are a skilled relationship-builder, who is comfortable working laterally across various teams, and partnering closely with executive leadership. You thrive in dynamic environments and successfully chart strategic paths forward in collaboration with others.

You are comfortable in implementing established programming as well as innovating and piloting new initiatives that build on a rich organizational history. You are a constant learner, always assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of programming and strategies. You relish establishing strong, clear systems of working and communications channels. You are outcomes-oriented, with constant attention to ensuring the greatest impact.

What you will do:

You will be a right-hand partner to the Chief Program Officer, with a primary focus on ensuring alignment between national strategy and local implementation. You will serve as a senior leader of Facing History and Ourselves, and as an instrumental leader within the Program team.

In addition to helping guide strategy and creating systems and processes for communication and programmatic innovation, you will partner with senior organization and Program leaders to ensure:

  • Organization-wide program and content strategies are informed by insights from the EPD-SPI, and they are executed with excellence at the regional level

  • Organizational pilots, professional learning, staff development, and support for educators meet the needs of local programming

  • Staffing levels and budget allocation support Program goals

  • Regional fundraising and programmatic strategies and priorities are aligned

  • Regional fee for service opportunities are effectively identified, vetted, and in support of programmatic priorities.

  • Additionally, you will perform other related duties as required by the position.

What you will bring to the role:

  • A minimum of 7 years of professional leadership experience in K-12 education, with a deep understanding of the US educational landscape

  • Experience with systems work in schools and districts

  • Experience managing programs across a broad portfolio, managing in a matrixed organization, and leading through change

  • Extensive experience coaching and mentoring senior staff, as well as managing and overseeing budgets and staff allocations

  • Experience evaluating and guiding the implementation of long- and short-term national and local strategy, ensuring strategic alignment and ongoing two-way learning

  • Lead, manage, and build culture through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens and hold your direct reports accountable for the same

  • Success working in a highly collaborative, cross-functional setting, with the ability to manage input from a variety of stakeholders

  • Keen interest in and commitment to continuous learning and improvement

  • Excellent interpersonal skills that allow you to learn from and leverage the experiences of your colleagues and the educators we serve

  • Highly effective communication skills across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders and audiences

  • Flexible problem solving with an ability to work on long-term projects as well as respond to unanticipated opportunities

  • Creative, dynamic, and curious person who is passionate about Facing History’s mission

Full-Time Benefits: In addition to meaningful and rewarding work, Facing History provides an excellent and competitive compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life & long-term disability insurance, a 403(b) program, generous paid time off, an employee assistance plan & a travel assistance plan, pre-tax Transit-pass program, flexible spending health care and dependent care accounts, 4 voluntary Aflac plans, and a friendly work environment.
