  • PURPOSE:
    The LEARN Charter School Network is a network of college preparatory elementary dedicated to providing our students with the solid academic foundation and ambition to earn a college degree. Our college preparatory elementary schools provide a rigorous educational program that is built upon an intimate understanding of each student's individual learning style and academic needs. We are guided by five principles which include: expectations of high achievement; mutual respect; the development of a safe and nurturing environment; active family participation; and the positive development of the whole child.
    The Teacher's Aide collaborates and partners with the Classroom Teacher to ensure an effective learning environment is sustained in the classroom. The Teacher's Aide will be responsible for assisting the teacher in an elementary classroom through clerical support, planning assistance, student engagement and providing direct student supervision during school recess and lunch periods.


    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/OUTCOMES
    Organized by 1-5 major categories of work to be performed, including % of time out of 100% % TIME SPENT
    • Follow the schedule provided by the classroom teacher.
    • Provide support to the classroom teacher to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment.
    • Assist the classroom teacher in planning and preparation for daily activities; aid instructional efforts of the teacher.
    • Support the classroom teacher in preparing lesson outlines, plans, and curricula in assigned areas.
    • Plan, prepare, copy, and develop various teaching aids for use in the classroom.
    • Present subject matter to scholars, under the guidance of a classroom teacher.
    • Lead classroom activities; may cover the classroom in the absence of the classroom teacher.
    • Assist scholars, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
    • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
    • Supervise scholars for safety and keep the learning environment clean and orderly by picking up learning materials, wiping tables and chairs, etc.
    • Effectively monitor scholars outside of classroom (e.g. recess, lunchroom, etc.) and while teacher is occupied
    • Intervene appropriately to prevent student disruption of the classroom's education process; interact with students in a supportive way reflecting reciprocal respect
    • Attend staff meetings, school programs, and in-service professional development trainings.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Education, Training and/or Experience
    1. High School Diploma (GED equivalent) or Associates Degree.
    2. ISBE Paraprofessional licensure required.
    3. 1-2 years of experience working with elementary school-age children in an urban school setting and/or youth organization.
    4. 1+ year of experience working with students in a classroom setting.
    5. Exhibits the skills required to successfully execute instructional and behavior management tasks:
      1. Possesses sufficient ability to monitor students and control behavior of students
      2. Understands and carries out oral and written instructions
      3. Utilizes materials, technology, etc. effectively to enhance instruction
      4. Demonstrates time management skills
      5. Provides for active student engagement through management of lessons
      6. Possess the ability to adapt to different tasks as needed
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

    4. Experience in development and implementation procedures.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Bilingual (Spanish).
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/TRAVEL
    May be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once. Physical demands require the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, walk around the classroom and kneel upwards of 60% of the day. In addition, walking up and down stairs several times a day. Must be able to lift 30-40 pounds for short periods of time.

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Majority of work performed in a general office/school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. May require participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
