    ACCOUNTING SPECIALIST

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
    The Accounting Specialist will perform accounting work for the Board of Education (BOE), involving the processing of BOE invoices for payment, and the generation of financial reports, while based in the City of Bridgeport's Accounts Payable Office.

    This work will encompass the processing of invoices and the creation of financial reports for BOE accounts, including primarily grant-funded accounts, under the BOE Office of Grants Development and Management jurisdiction within the BOE Finance Office.

    The work requires that the employee has demonstrated knowledge, skill, and ability in accounting and related clerical tasks.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    The Accounting Specialist will work in the City Accounts Payable Office, under joint-supervision.
  • The Financial Management Supervisor in charge of the City Accounts Payable Office will directly supervise the Accounting Specialist to complete tasks in conformance with established accounting standards, regulations, and procedures.
  • The BOE Director, Grants Development and Management, and/or BOE Business Office Financial Management Supervisor will supervise timely transmittal and processing of grant (or non-grant) invoices and reports in accordance with applicable timelines.


  • RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Process Payments
  • Match and process all BOE grant invoices.
  • Reconcile discrepancies as necessary.
  • Verify the accuracy of vendor invoices and backup documentation for specific purchase orders.
  • Data enter invoices for payment in the accounting system, on the established schedule and with the City Financial Management Supervisor's approval.
  • Maintain files of financial information, records, and documents to ensure easily accessible information in the management systems.
  • Create Financial Reports
  • Generate program-specific grant financial reports.
  • Monitor open orders, payments, and balances.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices to the accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and purchasing functions.
  • Ability to maintain financial records of some complexity.
  • Skill in mathematical calculations and use of various computer systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to take directions and perform tasks accurately as well as strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to interrelate effectively and harmoniously with coworkers and managerial personnel as a member of a team.

  • EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • High school graduate or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in accounting/bookkeeping and general business office procedures, or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training provides a demonstrated potential for performing the duties of the position.
  • Computer proficiency.
