Parent Involvement Coordinator
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to work with the principal, teacher, school social worker, and guidance counselor in bridging the gap between the school environment and the home environment. Position implements strategies to promote relationships that will foster personal-social growth, and effective communication between the teacher, parent, and child that maximizes learning. Work is supervised by the principal or assistant principal and is reviewed through conferences, discussion of problem areas, and feedback from users of these services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Serves as a channel of communication between the teacher and the parent in addressing the socio-economic needs of a child that interfere with learning.
•Promotes mutual respect, understanding, and support between school and home via parent conferences and home visits; establish rapport which encourages staff consultations and referrals.
•Encourages parents to visit, observe, and participate in children's school program; and supports and assists parents in expressing their concerns about their children to school personnel.
•Gathers information from home visits that will be useful in determining how best to meet the needs of the student and the student's parents relative to improving attendance and making the school experience more meaningful.
•Ensures that services are provided in a way that is compatible with the culture of the parents and children.
•Assists staff in understanding cultural and socio-economic circumstances of families; communicates problems observed in the home to appropriate school personnel.
•Serves as an advocate to assure that students' educational, social, emotional, and material needs are met; helps secure food, clothing, shelter, and medical care for those students in need of such assistance; and informs parents about the availability of community services.
•Works with social worker, school nurse, or guidance counselor in helping students and parents utilize the services of community agencies; accompanies sick children or suspended children home from school; transports parents to school conferences, and transports parents/students to medical appointments for child.
•Arranges and/or participates in conferences concerning children with special problems.
•Assists staff in facilitating appropriate discipline and attendance referrals; checks daily attendance and discourages absenteeism through home visits.
•Ensures that confidentiality is maintained regarding families and children.
•Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
•General knowledge of current social and economic problems and community assistance resources available to children.
•Knowledge of the school organization and its community.
•Skills in public relations.
•Ability to interpret school programs to groups and individuals.
•Ability to deal sensitively, confidentially, and tactfully with school personnel, families, and members of all socio-economic groups.
•Ability to exercise good judgement in appraising situations and making recommendations for actions to be taken.
•Ability to secure the cooperation of students/parents, obtain needed information, and provide needed services for them.
•Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, public agencies, school officials and staff.
Job Qualification
Pay Grade 65 | Part-Time | 10 Months | Minimum Monthly Salary $1,444.50
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
•Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in social science from accredited university and two (2) years school-based or human service work experience related to working directly with children and families or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•Desirable: Bachelor's Degree in social science from accredited university and four (4) years school-based work experience working directly with children and families.
