RESIDENT PRINCIPAL - YES PREP SYSTEMS OFFICE

Resident Principal

POSITION: Resident Principal 2022-2023

REPORTS TO: Managing Director of Leadership Development

POSITION TYPE: 12-month

START DATE: July 2022

COMPENSATION: $84,000

THE CHALLENGE

Across the nation, only half of all students from low-income communities graduate from high school and only 10% earn a college degree. Even though 89% of our students are economically disadvantaged, YES Prep provides evidence that different outcomes are possible. Eighty-three (83%) of YES Prep alumni matriculate to college within one year and alumni like Eddie Zapata are earning their college degrees at four times the rate of their peers with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. How do we do this? YES Prep has 25 campuses serving PK-12, 19 of those campuses serving 6th-12th graders, like Monique Bowie and 4 of those being our newest elementary campuses . The remaining 2 are YES Prep's newest elementary campuses . We will continue adding 2 elementary campuses per year until 2024. This allows us to serve even more families and provide access to a college preparatory mindset from a child's first schooling experience.

Houston is the 4th largest city and growing! There are over 20 public schools districts and other great public charter school options, like KIPP Texas - Houston and IDEA Public Schools, within Houston's city limits serving our increasing population. YES Prep's student enrollment is estimated to grow from 15,400+ students currently, to 23,000 by the 2024 - 2025 school year.

THE OPPORTUNITY

YES Prep needs dynamic Resident Principals, for both elementary and secondary schools, with a diverse set of experiences, to make our mission a reality. As a YES Prep employee, you will continuously grow as a leader, achieve jaw-dropping results, create pathways to opportunity for our students, build transformative relationships, and eliminate educational inequities to advance social justice.

To put it simply, the Principal Residency exists to build a bench of high-performing leaders who serve to fulfill the YES Prep mission and vision as a potential Principal.

THE ROLE

With the growth of the our organization and our schools, we need high performing talent at the Principal level to ensure we increase the number of students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead.

The Principal Residency develops leaders through a cohort model that focuses on:

  • Connecting data, relationships, ideas and people

  • Managing and implementing a vision through a team

  • Aligning decision making to vision, goals, values and focus areas

  • Deep study of literature on equity, leadership, and instruction throughout residency

  • Learning by doing and experiencing school leadership first hand

  • Creating a portfolio of resources that can be used once promoted to the Principal role

The Principal Residency consists of four interdependent parts:

1. Summer induction is an opportunity to build strong relationships with your Resident cohort, while gaining knowledge and skills necessary to enter the 2022- 2023 school year as a Resident Principal. This portion of the development program focuses on providing information and a safe space to test methods and new skills.

2. A campus assignment ensures Residents get daily 1:1 coaching and support from a high-performing, experienced Lead Principal for maximum exposure to learning and development of skills that are best learned in the context of a school setting. This experiential learning will serve to expose cohort members to the nuance and detail of the day-to-day Principal experience. Residents are also responsible for certain aspects of the school that will serve to bolster their development in areas they need to build more experience. For example, if you currently have culture and student support expertise you will most likely be matched to a campus where you can develop your academic and student achievement knowledge and skills.

3. Individualized development and coaching not only from a Lead Principal, but also from the YES Prep Leadership Development team. Coaching provides the most customized experience for Resident Principals as the content of coaching conversations are co-created by the Resident Principal, the Lead Principal, and Managing Director of Leadership Development. Residents also attend regular professional development as a cohort and participate in quarterly campus site visits.

4. Mid-year intersession week typically provides Residents with technical skills in functions such as Talent, Operations, Finance, and Programs. This portion of the development program focuses on exposure and practice of processes Residents will be expected to perform once in the Principal role.

Residency Commitments:

  • Principal Residency leaders will participate in all required professional learning activities including Summer Induction, Midyear Intersession, coaching sessions, and experiential learning opportunities.

  • All leaders will complete activities and requirements aligned to their learning within their current leadership roles. Examples include, but are not limited to, reflections, coaching preparation documents, assignments, etc.

  • All leaders will engage in coaching who will support his/her/their development as a leader, which could involve coaching conversations, observations in practice, reflection documents, and other coaching strategies to ensure active development and growth.

  • All leaders will execute assigned experiential learning activities, responsibilities and tasks as assigned. Leaders will be held accountable to tasks, responsibilities, and time on their visited campuses.

  • All leaders are expected to represent the YES Prep core values to the best of their ability.

  • Additional requirements as assigned.

Professional Expectations:

  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible

  • Participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance knowledge and skills

  • Demonstrate knowledge, and support of YES Prep Schools mission, values, standards, policies and procedures, confidentiality standards, Employee Handbook expectations and code of ethical behavior

  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws, local board policies, administrative guidelines, and the Texas Educators' Code of Ethics

  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with others

Company

WHO WE ARE   For over twenty years, YES Prep Public Schools has redefined what is possible in public education. With 14,100 college-bound students across 19 campuses, we are a system of high-performing public charter schools proving that students from underserved communities can achieve at the highest academic levels. Our exceptional results demonstrate that better outcomes are not only possible, but also probable, when school systems build a culture of high expectations, and create effective support systems to ensure that student achievement is at the forefront of every decision made.

MISSION   YES Prep Public Schools will increase the number of students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead.

VISION   Every child in Houston will have equitable access to a public school that delivers a college-ready education.

OUR CORE VALUES

Grow Authentic Leaders

Eliminate Educational Inequity to Advance Social Justice

Achieve Jaw-Dropping Results

Build Transformative Relationships

Create Pathways to Opportunity

Our focus at YES Prep is to prepare thousands of underserved students in Houston to be college ready, thereby transforming the city’s educational landscape. As such, all YES Prep students are expected to embody and demonstrate the YES Prep core values through their actions, their work, and their relationships.

WHY WE EXIST   Across the nation, only half of all students from low-income communities graduate from high school and only 10% earn a college degree. Over the long term, these statistics damage our economy and prevent the next generation of leaders from emerging. In a country where a child’s zip code often determines their life trajectory, YES Prep provides evidence that different outcomes are possible when students are given access to high-quality educational opportunities. At YES Prep, we believe that every student, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, deserves the opportunity to receive a world-class education.

OUR CHARTER SCHOOL STATUS   Charter schools are public schools intended as champions for education innovation. Charter schools are free from some of the regulations and red tape of traditional public schools. While we are a public school, some of the regulations that apply to traditional public schools do not apply to us. We do not have contracts for teachers, we are not required to provide duty free lunches to our teachers, and we can set our own academic calendar and hours of operation, providing more learning time for our students and subject to the Texas Education Agency. In Texas, charter schools receive state funding, but must raise funds privately to account for resources not funded by the government.

Along with this freedom comes a heightened sense of expectations for our staff and our students. Our mission is only possible if we hold ourselves, each other, and each of our students to the highest standards of performance and behavior.
