    School Description

    Founded in Chicago in 1876, Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road (Hardey Preparatory for Boys and Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls) are independent, Catholic, single-sex elementary schools committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian, faith-based community. The educational mission is deeply rooted in the 200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and shared with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools located in 30 countries; including 25 schools in the United States and Canada. The essence of this tradition is the total development of each child: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical. Our girls and boys are taught in single-sex classrooms, but follow a similar curriculum and share in many activities. With a total enrollment of approximately 650 students, the Schools are organized into three academic divisions each led by a division head.

    Position Description

    Sacred Heart Schools is seeking a School Building Engineer with strong, hands-on engineering and management experience with the ability to direct and coordinate with the maintenance team. The Engineer ensures the maintenance of the facility is consistent with the Goals and Criteria and the philosophy of Sacred Heart Schools education.

    Essential Job Functions
    • Maintains building mechanicals, including maintenance - boiler, vacuum pumps, steam traps, thermostats, air handlers, filters, heat exchangers, pipe fitting, pneumatics, and HVAC systems.
    • Maintains plumbing, domestic water, pumps, piping, drains, water filters, valves, and shut offs.
    • Handles day-to-day maintenance/engineering work orders and repairs
    • Inspects, repairs, and maintains all in-house facility needs including, but not limited to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC maintenance in all campus buildings.
    • Maintains outdoor landscape equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, school truck, etc.); assists and performs horticulture, landscaping, athletic field preparations, and exterior maintenance when needed.
    • Responsible for snow removal during winter months, weekends, and holidays; early arrival to have snow plowed by 6:00am; advises administration of winter road conditions.
    • Works with architects and outside contractors as well as deciphers the needs for securing outside, qualified professionals.
    • Works with the technology department in installing computer wiring and mounting equipment.
    • Prepares for the openings and closings of each school year in a timely fashion.
    • Manages and maintains all department tools and equipment.
    • Purchases supplies and equipment as needed and within budget.
    • Serves as on-call individual and first responder to burglar and fire alarm calls/other emergencies as well as other off-hours needs of the school.
    • Assists with school set-up and tear downs; available for school onsite special events.
    • Staff Liaison to the Building and Grounds Council.
    • Performs other responsibilities as assigned.

    Qualities and Requirements
    • Strong commercial HVAC experience required -- boilers, chillers, and air handlers.
    • HVAC certification is preferred; experience working as an HVAC technician a plus.
    • Strong electrical and plumbing skills preferred.
    • Solid understanding of the mechanics of how commercial school buildings operate preferred.
    • Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills and professionalism in all communications with employees and vendors.
    • Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with department heads, supervisors, and other staff members.
    • Able to function effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
    • Physical ability to do snow removal with snow blowers and/or shovels as well as other tasks involving heavy equipment is required.
    • Retains a good understanding of Life Safety and Chicago City Codes preferred.
    • Available before/after hours for on-call duties.
    • Extremely dependable and reliable.
