JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Special Education Coordinator is part of the Special Education Leadership Team working in all BSDVT schools PreK-12. This individual will mentor and supports Student Support Services staff in providing Educational Benefit to students. The team works together to ensures compliance with due process laws, practices, and procedures through technical assistance to staff, parents, and others as required.

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services. This position will begin as soon as possible through June 30.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Director of Special Services, the Special Education Coordinator is responsible for oversight and mentorship of all Student Support Services staff in the day-to-day functions. The Special Education Coordinator ensures compliance with due process laws, practices, and procedures through technical assistance to staff, parents, and others as required. These duties include -
  • Oversight and support of adult transition including employment and life skills
  • Provide support to students, teams, and families in school transitions including planning and monitoring of student needs/success
  • Act as LEA in IEP/evaluation meetings
  • Develop and implement the Extended School Year (ESY) services
  • Compliance monitoring
  • Mentorship of new staff and ongoing coaching in compliance and use of High Leverage Practices in Special Education
  • Collaboratively develop and implement district training
  • Attend meetings as LEA to facilitate communication and provide compliance oversight
  • Meet with the Director of Student Support Services weekly
  • Other duties as assigned

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Director of Special Services, the Middle - High School Special Education Coordinator is responsible for oversight and mentorship of all Student Support Services staff in the day-to-day functions. The Special Education Coordinator ensures compliance with due process laws, practices, and procedures through technical assistance to staff, parents, and others as required.

Assist in the development of a proactive, preventative, and comprehensive system of services to ensure the academic and behavioral needs are being met to the greatest extent possible.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, in addition to the following:

Five years of relevant special education experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Knowledge of and ability to effectively implement Federal and State rules and regulations pertaining to special education, and Section 504.

Holds or is eligible for Vermont Professional Educator's License with an endorsement as a Director of Special Education preferred.

Knowledge and experience in program and project management and planning.

Master's degree or higher

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply principles of logic or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables

Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies.

Tools/Technology Requirements: Experience and proficient computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs required. Knowledge of web-based applications for special education paperwork management and compliance.

Physical and Mental Demands: In general, a moderate degree of physical stamina is required to perform the essential functions of the job. The employee is regularly required to move around the office. Prolonged periods of sitting in front of a computer, reading, and keyboarding are often necessary. Stress can result from deadlines, conflicts, and other daily occurrences. The employee frequently reaches with hands and arms, with some bending and twisting to access file cabinets, office machinery, and supplies. Close visual acuity is necessary.
