SPECIFIC DUTIES

Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) in the Syracuse City School District are itinerant service providers. Each of our TVIs travel between building to provide services, consult with classroom teachers and administrators as well as ensure that each visually impaired student on the caseload has the appropriate materials and equipment to succeed in their classroom. Duties of the selected candidate will include:

  • Conduct functional vision assessments of children
  • Prepare and present formal reports to the Committee on Special Education in regard to the vision needs of individual students
  • Review all medical reports which correspond with the student's visual status
  • Consult with general and special educators regarding the selection of specific materials and program modifications required by the student
  • Assess the student's need for specialized materials and equipment
  • Arrange for the selection and purchase (if necessary) of adaptive equipment required by the student
  • Provide direct instruction in Braille as needed
  • Provide regular therapy as designated by the IEP to visually impaired students
  • Provide ongoing consultation to teachers and teaching assistants who work with low vision and blind students
  • Develop comprehensive IEPs for low vision and blind students
  • Participate in parent conferences and communicate with parents on a regular basis
  • Review and update IEPs to meet the needs of visually impaired students


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proven experience accelerating measurable student learning in urban schools (preferred)
  • Training and or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • Minimum of two years' successful classroom teaching experience (preferred)
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire.
  • All candidates must possess New York State teacher certification in their subject area, or qualify to obtain it by the first date of employment. This requires at least a Bachelor's degree. Licensed teachers from other states may qualify for reciprocity.
  • Please note that New York State requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 for certification, and one hired, this proof will be kept on file in the Office of Human Resources.
  • Once offered, you will be required to declare that all previous obligations with an employing school district have been met and you are not seeking this position with the intent of resigning from a previous commitment in which you have not served.
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $102.00 to the candidate.

SALARY/SALARY RANGE:
  • The current starting salary for SCSD Teachers is $50,000. With proof of outside related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
  • Teachers who are assigned to work at schools with extended learning time will receive an additional stipend.
  • Teachers will have opportunities to teach in our Summer School Programs, receiving an hourly rate of $42.69.
