The School Nurse provides preventive health services to support the education process by working to assure the health of students in a manner that promotes optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development. The nurse provides such services as case finding, health education, referring and care in order to help prevent serious health problems which could later be more difficult and costly to address.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.
  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of all students;
  • Provides resources, and/or locations for families to complete the required vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening requirements for Texas students;
  • Coordinates with the social workers/counselors/advisors to located resources for parents; Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies;
  • Obtains health histories; Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students;
  • Prepare any required reports for the school district partners;
  • Works with families to complete all required immunizations and manages the immunization process which includes gathering missing documentation, ensuring both the K12 and district systems are updated to reflect changes; creates and maintains database of local resources for low-cost immunization providers;
  • Provides health education and anticipatory guidance; Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health;
  • Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health;
  • Counsels with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices;
  • Follows all state and federal health codes and laws; works to remain compliant with required health regulations;
  • Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline

Certificates and Licenses: Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state where the school is located and holds an unrestricted license; Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS).

OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing or pediatric nursing
  • Knowledge of principles and practices underlying professional nursing
  • Knowledge/understanding of principles and practices underlying the special field of school health; Familiarity with current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues
  • Ability to work cooperatively with appropriate agencies
  • Ability to clear required background check
  • Ability to travel for student health care needs
  • Ability to travel for school meetings/professional development
