    The Studio School Tech Director Job Description

    Reports to: Performing Arts Directors, with evaluations at the end of each season

    Hours: (approx. 10 hours/week); some nights and weekends

    Job Summary: The Technical Director is primarily responsible for supervision and/or implementation of all production elements (lighting, sound, set design and construction, etc.) of all Studio School productions. The Technical Director ensures safe-working practices, facilitates repair and maintenance of the theatre resources and equipment. Key to this is a strong work ethic centered on excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships and communications with all artistic parties (designers, actors, etc.), as well as administrative staff, and volunteers.
    • He or she works with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties.


    Duties and Responsibilities
    • Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of stage craft class with students for individual shows; our tech crew is populated by our extra-curricular stage craft class that is taught and directed by our TD.
    • Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
    • Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
    • Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and/or sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects.
    • Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and management.
    • Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
    • Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies when requested.
    • Attends technical Week rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the show.
    Qualifications

    • Ability and knowledge to handle multiple, simultaneous tasks in a timely manner
    • (including familiarity with ADA and OSHA compliance)

    • Competent, working knowledge of theatrical equipment, design tools and software.

    Because a TD may be called upon to deal with a wide range of technical issues, he or she benefits from a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Head Coaches must hold a current certificate in AED/CPR upon hire.
    • Assistant coaches must hold a current certificate in First Aid/CPR or a willingness to obtain.
    • All coaches must be a CDE licensed teacher or hold a valid Coaches registration with CHSAA upon hire.
    • All Coaches in Colorado must hold a current concussion certification from the NFHS or Children's Hospital Colorado upon hire.
    • All Coaches must pass the CHSAA annual Coaches Exam.

    EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
    • Previous coaching experience and/or participation at the high school or college level is preferred.

    TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
    • Ability to supervise students, enforce district, school, league and CHSAA rules and regulations.
    • Possess knowledge and skills in the specific sport.
    • Ability to plan, organize and successfully direct specific sport.
    • Ability to perform, as well as teach, advanced techniques in specific sport.
    • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent Policies and building and department procedures.
    • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
    • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

    NECESSARY SKILLS AND BACKGROUND: Hold a current certificate in First Aid/CPR or a willingness to obtain. Previous coaching experience and/or participation at the high school or college level. Must be able to supervise students, enforce district, school CHSSA rules and regulations. Possess knowledge and skills in the specific sport. Ability to plan, organize, successfully direct specific sport. Able to perform, as well as teach, advanced techniques in specific sport.
