    ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:

    The School Nurse is appointed by the Principal and serves under the direct supervision of the Principal. The School Nurse supports the health and wellbeing of the entire community with a particular focus on the physical and mental needs of students and staff. The School Nurse supports the creation and implementation of school policies that promote a healthy school. The School Nurse provides support in documenting the health requirements and expectations required of students and staff.

    EXPECTATIONS:
    • Approximately 15-20 hours per week - during school year, other hours as needed to fulfill accountabilities


    ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    Specific accountabilities shall include, but not be limited to:
    • Maintaining knowledge of the mission and philosophy of Notre Dame College Prep and support in incorporating and communicating its vision.

    • Developing and maintaining an appropriate space for examination and treatment.

    • Ensuring compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

    • Determining the impact of students' contagious illnesses and acting to prevent the spread of communicable disease in the school setting.

    • Providing and/or delegating services including first aid, care for ill students and emergency care to students and staff.

    • Screening for health problems that impact education.

    • Identifying and managing students' health concerns so they are ready to learn.

    • Acting as a liaison between home and school by communicating with parents regarding students' health and safety needs and developing plans to meet those needs at school.

    • Assisting students in accessing health care.

    • Providing students with learning opportunities that promote individual and community health.

    • Acting as a member of the crisis intervention team.

    • Administering and monitoring effectiveness of medications given at school.

    • Providing school staff with current information about students' health concerns and care on a confidential need-to-know basis.

    • Identifying resources and information about services in the community and providing these services to students and parents.

    • Writing health components of the Individual Education Plan.

    • Recommending modifications in the school program for students who require accommodations because of health concerns.

    • Developing and maintaining healthcare plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day.

    • Maintaining communication with administrators, teachers and other school personnel, and parents to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students.

    • Acting as a liaison between the home, school and community health agencies to enhance health and wellness of the student population.

    • Maintaining confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.

    • All school nurses are Registered Nurses in the state of Illinois and have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in addition to a Type 73 certification as defined by the Illinois State Teachers Certification Board. School nurses also hold certification in audiometric and vision screening and are certified instructors in American Heart Association CPR and AED.

    • Continue professional self-development.


    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Bachelor degree in content area or teaching in that content area, excellent communication skills, an energetic and outgoing personality, strong administrative/organizational skills, and familiarity with 1:1 technology, Google for Education, and basic computing are essential.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Master degree in content area or education, experience in secondary education, and experience in a Catholic school setting are preferred.

    Physical Expectations:

    Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, lifting, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

    Salary and Benefits

    Salary will be provided according to experience and education. This position will initially be paid through federal COVID relief funds via the state regional office of education.
