PURPOSE OF POSITION

AVID tutorials offer a collaborative environment in which students use the inquiry process and Socratic dialogue to address points of confusion from their content classes. AVID tutors support our AVID Elective students who are underrepresented in higher education, through the facilitation of the AVID 10-step tutorial process to ensure students are thinking critically and problem-solving using inquiry. Additionally, AVID tutors serve as role models for AVID Elective students.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

  • Support AVID scholars through facilitating small group tutorial sessions
  • Model inquiry, academic language, higher level thinking, and problem solving skills
  • Provide feedback on student work and group collaboration
  • In collaboration with AVID Elective Teachers and Coordinators, lead debriefs and collaborate dialogue with a team of tutors to support scholars' agency
  • Assist AVID Elective Teachers and Coordinators with tutorial routines, structures and student support in the AVID Elective Classrooms
  • Adhere to district/site policies and procedures
  • Engage in ongoing professional development
WORK LOCATION

  • Lead AVID Tutors will work in one of MMSD's eleven middle schools that implement the AVID elective.
  • Placement is based on tutor availability, academic strengths, work experience, and Madison Metropolitan Middle School needs.
HOURS OF WORK

  • Lead AVID Tutors are required to work the same schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or Tuesday through Friday during the academic school day.
  • Lead AVID Tutors are scheduled somewhere between 5-15 hours of work per week in the AVID Elective Class as well as an additional 6 hours throughout the week to provide additional classroom and coordinator support (schedule coordinated to work with the AVID team's needs).


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates are either currently enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college or a college graduate
  • Previous AVID tutoring experience
  • Previous experience working with diverse middle school or high school-aged youth
  • Experience with small group facilitation
  • Previous experience working in a school setting or with school staff
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to commit for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • AVID Alumni are strongly encouraged to apply
ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency or Fluency in both English and Spanish languages
  • Previous experience working in a school setting or with school staff
  • Experience working with students in a pre-college or college readiness program
  • Ability to commit for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year (or at minimum one semester)
