    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    The selected leader will develop, advocate, and enact a shared mission, vision, and core values of high-quality education and success that leads to the optimal educational development of all students, as defined by Board policy and District curriculum expectations, through appropriate application of leadership, supervisory and administrative skills at the building level.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Curriculum Development and Evaluation: Develop and support intellectually rigorous and coherent systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to promote each student's academic success and well-being.
    • Accountable for establishing an educational environment committed to providing an equitable education for all learners.
    • Assumes primary responsibility for coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the school's educational program and demonstrative experience with special education instruction and associated legal issues.
    • Advances an instructional program that nurtures and grows the Whole Child; an educational program that is balanced between the development of social and emotional skills as well as academic aptitude.
    • Implements appropriate staffing patterns within the school to facilitate progress toward curriculum objectives.
    • Develops and evaluates programs to meet specific needs of the school and its students and supervises the instructional staff in the implementation of curriculum and student activities.
    • Effectively utilizes the resource people available to assist with curriculum and staff development at the building level.

    Personnel and Staff Evaluation:
    • Supervises and evaluates designated certified and non-certified staff regarding their individual and group performance within the framework of the school program in accordance with board policy, administrative directives and state regulations and laws.
    • Assists in the mentoring and orientation of new staff members.
    • Supports in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, evaluation, and performance management when needed of staff assigned to the school.

    Staff Development/Professional Community for Teachers and Staff:
    • Foster a community of teachers and other professional staff, and develop the professional capacity and practice of school personnel.
    • Develops program to orient staff to broad purposes of the school, as well as to specific required skills in instructional methodologies and school procedures.
    • Keeps informed on current trends, best practices, and research in education by advanced study, by visiting other school systems, by attending conferences, and/or by other appropriate means.

    Community Relations/Meaningful Engagement of Families and Community: Engage families and the community in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways.
    • Responsible for articulating the educational programs and enlists the participation of the community in the life of the school.
    • Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs.
    • Attends select Board of Education meetings and participates as requested.
    • Partners with the School Governance Council, Planning and Placement Teams, and other groups to strengthen community participation.

    Administration/Operations and Management/School Improvement: Act as agent of continuous improvement and manage school operations and resources to promote each student's academic success and well-being.
    • Implements Board policies, administrative regulations, and annual Board and District goals as they relate to the school's educational programs.
    • Prepares/plans budget requests for the building, school improvement plan (including projection of staffing needs), and monitors the expenditures of funds on an ongoing basis the collaboration with and input from the School Governance Council as required by state statute.
    • Partners with the Central Office to address building activities and issues as may be required.
    • Assumes responsibility for the attendance, health and conduct of all students.
    • Maintains accurate records of individual student progress in the building.
    • Maintains accurate records of all building activities and functions, and facilitates the routine operations of the school.
    • Delegates authority to responsible personnel in the absence of the principal.
    • Contributes to the work of the district's administrative team.
    • Maintains and monitors an inventory of books, supplies, and equipment.
    • Maintains the school's student-based budget
    • Accepts additional assignments in the role of principal, as requested by the Superintendent.

    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
    • Ability to think strategically to understand a school and community's underlying issues, and inspires and energizes students, staff and community; builds and maintains effective interpersonal relationships with all members of the school community.
    • Demonstrated experience in advocacy, leadership, cultural and linguistic competencies with diverse urban/suburban populations, and change agentry.
    • Excellent clear, consistent and continual communication, and possess the interpersonal skills required with strong customer service orientation to gain trust and respect with all stakeholders and willingness to become fully involved and invested in the school.
    • Strong problem solving, conflict resolution skills, and common-sense management
    • Advocate effectively for a diverse group of students with different needs and promotes the interests of the school
    • Commitment to seeking input and openness to considering the opinions of others, while able to make independent decisions, when appropriate
    • Knowledge of continuous improvement processes, facilitation skills and the ability to execute objectives from the district, informed by the needs and desires of the school community
    • Ability to maintain composure, especially when facing critical events
    • Proven ability to manage a wide variety of programs
    • Ability to lead change initiated within the school community, and the willingness to lead changes directed from Central Office
    • Proven ability to build consensus and to establish and maintain effective partnerships with leadership teams and the rest of the school community
    • Demonstrated ability to use data to inform decisions that drive instruction and educational equity as a measure of achievement, fairness, and opportunity in education
    • Knowledge of special education instructional and legal issues
    • Ability to maintain warm, supportive, and engaging relationships with children with demonstrated empathy

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Certification (or eligibility for certification) as a Connecticut Intermediate Administrator (092)
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others
    • Successful leadership experience
    • Successful teaching experience
    • Minimum of three years' principal experience in a diverse or urban district
    • Knowledge of effective teaching techniques and instructional practices that result in quality learning for all students
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Such additions or alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable
    • Bilingual (preferred)

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    • Twelve-month position
    • Salary per the Norwalk Association of School Administrators (NASA).

    EVALUATION:
    • The performance of the principal will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the District's Administrator Evaluation Plan.
