POSITION TITLE: Extended Day Assistant Supervisor

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Arlington Public Schools (APS) requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption is approved. Being fully vaccinated means that an individual is at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen (i.e. Pfizer, Moderna, and/or Johnson and Johnson). As a condition of employment, newly hired employees will be required to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination.

Human Resources is accepting applications for the Extended Day Program Assistant Supervisor(s) applicant pool; Full-time, Grade X-08, 191-days, 7.5 hours per day (variable split-shift schedules) positions. NOTE: work site location, work schedule/hours, contract work days, etc. are subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Interviews will be conducted on an as needed basis during the 2020-2021 School Year. (Effective date to be determined pending students returning to school buildings.)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Extended Day Assistant Supervisor supports the Extended Day Supervisor in the overall leadership, management and implementation of the Extended Day (out-of-school time) program, including supervision of staff, and the coordination of program activities with school personnel. The Assistant Supervisor assumes the responsibility of managing the program when the supervisor is not present.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the staff and students;
  • Support the development and implementation of a range of age and ability appropriate programs and activities for children 4 - 12 years of age. Programming must include, but is not limited to enrichment activities (i.e. literacy, STEM, fitness), homework supervision, athletic and recreational activities and special events;
  • Collaborate with the supervisor to create a culture of learning by providing relevant and frequent professional development;
  • Develop appropriate intervention strategies and collaboration with school staff;
  • Communicate effectively with parents, administrators, and other school personnel;
  • Coach and evaluate assigned staff;
  • Ensure staff meet annual staff development requirements in accordance with program policy and licensing standards;
  • Lead and participate in professional development opportunities;
  • Work with the supervisor to maintain and monitor site budget, materials, equipment and other program resources
  • Support compliance with Arlington Public schools policies and procedures;
  • Receive at least 24 hours of relevant and programmatic professional development annually
  • Other related duties as required.


EXPERIENCE:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Thorough knowledge of goals, procedures and practices of Arlington Public Schools Extended Day Program and out of school programming. Must meet one of the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in a child related field and one year experience in the group care of School-age children, OR
  • Forty-eight (48) semester hours of college credit of which 12 hours are in child- related subjects and one-year of experience in the group care of school age children, OR
  • Two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity and at least one of the following education backgrounds:
  • A one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours; OR
  • A child development credential that meets Virginia Department of Social Services licensing guidelines for program directors.


The following certifications must be attained within the first 30 days of employment and maintained while employed:
  • First Aid
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Medication Administration Training (MAT)


Consideration will also be given to those candidates who possess a combination of post-secondary education and experience that meets the requirements of the Virginia Department of Social Services child care licensing standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of Out of School Time best practice;
  • Strong leadership, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Ability to lead a group of child care workers, including the development and articulation of a clear program vision;
  • Identify and provide regular professional development based on the needs of the staff;
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to plan and implement, developmentally appropriate activities and events
  • Oversight of the planning and implementation of program activities;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, staff, parents and administrators;
  • Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain written records and prepare accurate written reports;
  • Ability to supervise safely the activities of children in a variety of settings;
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace, social media, and the internet.
