West Hartford Public Schools - Secondary Literacy Coach
The Secondary Literacy Instructional Coach serves a vital role supporting teachers and students across schools at the middle grades. The emphasis for this role is on increasing teacher capacity with tier I literacy strategies and in differentiation of reading and writing instruction. The Instructional Coach will support the Secondary Reading Department Supervisor, as well as building administrators, content area teachers, and support personnel, to ensure the delivery of quality literacy instruction to support student achievement. The Instructional Coach will also share knowledge and expertise with all stakeholders through resources, modeling, team and one-on-one coaching, and professional development. As needed, the Coach may also assume intervention/teaching assignments, provide direct services to students who require reading intervention, and support school-based implementation of the district 6-12 English/Language Arts curriculum as defined in the district and school development and performance plans.
The responsibilities required of this position include:
The candidate must possess a strong knowledge base in literacy intervention and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate must also work collaboratively with colleagues to improve student reading and writing achievement.
Educational Background and Work Experience:
Certification: Secondary English Language Arts (015), Remedial Reading (102), and Reading and Language Arts Consultant Certification (097) preferred.

- Provide ongoing, job-embedded professional learning and supportive feedback to teachers on instructional strategies
- Support literacy specialists with intervention and progress monitoring
- Identify professional learning needs and opportunities for the Secondary Reading Department and design Curriculum and Staff Improvement Sessions to support teacher needs.
- Analyze and interpret district assessment data to identify student needs, monitor student progress, and assist teachers with differentiated instruction
- Administer screening and diagnostic assessments
- Participate in curriculum development and implementation with a focus on access and equity
- Support students identified for Tier II/III intervention, model instruction, and build capacity for literacy instruction throughout the system.

Educational Background and Work Experience:
- Minimum of five years successful teaching/literacy coaching experience
- Ability to establish trust, maintain confidentiality, and respect the professional expertise of teachers
- Ability to analyze student assessment data
- Ability to review and conduct instructional practice research
- Ability to collaborate with teachers, administrators, and literacy specialists in multiple school settings
- Ability to provide effective professional development to adult learners
