POSITION SUMMARY:

The Program Specialist - Special Education Secondary Transition will be responsible for supporting the implementation and monitoring of secondary transition services for students with disabilities in Prince George's County Public Schools. The Program Specialist will assist the office of secondary transition with providing transition related support to school teams, students with disabilities and families in ensuring successful college, career and community planning to post-secondary outcomes.

Salary Range: $49,963 - $111,816

Detailed Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of an effective instructional program for secondary students with disabilities in areas of career academics, career exploration and planning, independent living, self-advocacy and community involvement;
  • Acts as a resource to students, family's teachers and specialists in understanding secondary transition planning and services through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process for successful post-secondary outcomes;
  • Trains and assist special education staff in designing and implementing an effective secondary transition plan; writing measurable post-school goals and objectives as part of the IEP;
  • Provides transition focused technical assistance and professional development in collaboration with special education staff, community agency personnel and other relevant transition stakeholders;
  • Assists in the identification and implementation of processes, procedures, and best practices in secondary transition aligned to research and evidence based practices, and the Maryland Common Core State Standards;
  • Assists in the monitoring of state and/or district transition audit activities and reviews including but not limited to indicators 13 & 14;
  • Assists in the development and implementation of career fairs, transition fairs, district transition meetings, and family workshops;
  • Assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of Secondary Transition State Grant Activities; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience in the field of Special Education or related services;
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience working as a school based secondary Work study or Transitioning Youth Coordinator;
  • Knowledge of research and evidence based practice in secondary transition, career development and vocational training opportunities, post-secondary education options and school-to-career programming;
  • Ability to promote and encourage parental involvement and participation in the transition process;
  • Ability to establish and maintain data tracking systems and utilize various software programs for project and program efficiency; and
  • Knowledge of special education Administrative Procedures and State and Federal laws; and
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree; Master's degree or equivalent preferred.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Holds or is eligible for a Standard Professional Certificate or an Advanced Professional Certificate issued by the Maryland State Department of Education in Special Education.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
