Substitute Teaching Assistant (The Bridge Program )

2021-2022 School Year (short term assignment)

Falmouth High School has an opening for a Teaching Assistant to work with the Adjustment Counselor and other staff in the Bridge Program; a specialized program that provides clinical and academic support for students returning to school after an extended absence. When students miss school for an extended period of time, their transition back often brings both academic, emotional, and social challenges. To make the adjustment to a regular school routine as smooth as possible, the Bridge Program provides support to promote social/emotional stability and academic progress. The Bridge Program coordinates with the guidance department, teachers, adjustment counselors, and other staff and faculty members to help facilitate a successful reintegration to Falmouth High School. Experience with high school students, especially potentially high-risk students, is required.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma.
  • Post-secondary education preferred with background in education, adolescent behavior, mental health, and/or counseling.
  • Experience working with high school students, specifically potentially high-risk students experiencing depression, anxiety, school avoidance, illness, substance abuse, etc.
  • Safety Care, CPR, and first aid training preferred and/or willing to be trained.
  • Ability to take direction from and work under the supervision of one or more faculty members.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities:
  • Update and maintain data on student trends for the Bridge Program.
  • Record and track attendance of students in the Bridge Program.
  • Monitor academic progress of students in the Bridge Program.
  • Maintain an organized system for work completion and return to classroom teachers.
  • Assist students in returning to regular classes/regular schedule as quickly as possible.
  • Maintain regular contact with classroom teachers concerning students' academic standing and gather coursework from classroom teachers for students on a daily basis.
  • Academic tutoring of students.
  • Communicate with hospital/mental health facility tutors and other outside tutors as needed.
  • Collaborate and communicate with school staff in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality at all times.
  • Attend student support team, transition, re-entry, and other meetings as deemed necessary.
  • Perform check-ins with students as needed.
  • Refer students to Adjustment Counselor, Academic Coordinator, or other staff as needed for crisis evaluation/support.
  • Organize and manage the Bridge Program classroom.
  • Assist students in developing coping skills to return to class.
  • Communicate with outside providers as deemed necessary by school staff.
  • Attend high school and district meetings and trainings as deemed necessary and appropriate.
  • Willingness to be trained in specific behavioral techniques.
  • Perform such other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Bridge Program staff and/or the Principal.

Salary: In accordance with FEA Unit C contract.
