HIRING SALARY RANGE: $18.23 - $21.88 per hour

POSITION SALARY RANGE: $18.23 - $27.35 per hour

*To become a Para Professional, you need to be Highly Qualified, which means you must have ONE of the following:Possess an Associate Degree OR 48 semester hours of college level education OR pass the Para-Professional exam.*

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs day-to-day activities of teaching Special Education students (including preschool), Second Language Acquisition (SLA) students, preschool students in the district program and/or students in the regular classroom while under the supervision of an appropriately endorsed teacher.

SUPERVISED BY: School Principal/Special Education Teacher/Second Language Teacher/Director of Preschool

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS:
1. Monitor and control disruptive behavior of students on and off school grounds during activities such as field trips or community work. Monitor students for signs of abuse. Prevent students who are out of control from hurting themselves and others. May use behavior contracts to control disruptive behavior. Provide nurturing to students. Implement prescribed programs for students whose behaviors range from violent to moderately and mildly disordered. Restrain a child when necessary.
2. Assist in the event of life-threatening behavior or severe health crisis for medically fragile students, handle body fluids and assist with feeding.
3. Provide direct instruction and reinforce academic subjects, vocational and community skills or English language acquisition under supervision of teacher for Special Education, SLA, or general classroom students. Provide instruction and reinforcement in a variety of settings, e.q. special education classrooms, community locations, general education classrooms, and school grounds. May provide vocational skills by modeling and assisting students with domestic and clerical duties.
4. Supervise students in the classroom, on the playground, and/or in the lunchroom.
5. Prepare lesson plans and grades as directed by supervising teacher.
6. Maintain daily record of student behavior. Provide observations, opinions and feedback to professional staff.
7. Perform other clerical duties such as typing, filing, copying, answering phones, ordering supplies, and maintaining inventory of forms and supplies.
8. Use instructional equipment, including computers and audiovisual and adaptive equipment.
9. Attend staff, team meetings and parent conferences when appropriate.
10. Assist in the communication between the school and parents (including home visits when accompanied by supervisor) by acting as an interpreter or translator, if allotted appropriate time in duty day.
11. Assess SLA students to document proficiency and progress in English and native language in listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehension.
12. Clean rooms after projects, play and at end of day, wash dishes, do laundry and arrange furniture for following day.
13. Act as a substitute teacher in emergency situations.
14. Perform other duties assigned by the teacher or principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Preferred 2 years previous successful experience with children as a Teacher Assistant or equivalent, including 1 year experience with Second Language Acquisition students for bilingual applicants.
4. Clerical skills appropriate to duties of position.
5. Valid community First Aid and CPR card (or acquire within 6 months of hire).
6. Bilingual applicants must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish and English as determined by District assessment.
7. Bilingual applicants must have training in Second Language Acquisition or instruction or begin training within 6 months of hire.
8. Training required to meet accreditation standards.
9. Small Vehicle Operator permit if required.
10. Group Leader qualified by Department of Social Service if applicable.
11. TB test and physical exam (acquired within 6 weeks of employment), if applicable.
12. Must be highly qualified according to No Child Left Behind Act
