POSITION: Middle School Student Support
REPORTS TO: Middle School Dean of Students, Middle School Assistant Principal, Middle School Principal
PURPOSE: Student Support provides leadership and direction at the 5th-8th grade level by working proactively to create a thriving school culture based upon Tapestry's core values. In the Student Support role it is essential to collaborate with the people that work closest with the student to provide behavioral interventions and social-emotional learning support based upon relationship building and research based practices that are rooted in restorative justice. These relationships include: classroom teachers, administration and families. Communication both positively and proactively will be the key to building a synergistic team of support for students. In the student support role you are providing all stakeholders, including parents, teachers and other administrators with classroom/school-wide behavior management strategies and support.
Relationship Building
  • Conduct conflict resolution, peer mediation and restorative circles when necessary.
  • Using restorative practices, restorative questioning, de-escalation techniques
  • Support student reflection on PIRR traits while utilizing reflections for common areas, including:
○ Bathrooms, Cafeteria, Entering/Exit, the building, hallways and the front office.
○ During experiences when students need to be a good audience member both inside and outside of the classroom (guest speakers, experts, Intensives, and field work).
  • SEL focused small groups during lunch (on a structured scheduled)
  • Following a daily schedule to check in with students identified on caseload throughout the day
  • Communicate & document communication with families regarding behavioral, social, attendance & academic needs
Creating a safe and productive school environment
  • Develop structures that provide recognition of a variety of student accomplishments and positive behaviors.
  • Continually supervise students to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment where students can thrive.
  • When needed, offer additional support through substitute teaching in the classroom
○ Supervision schedule includes:
■ Classroom support during instructional time
■ Cafeteria during assigned grade lunches
■ Front foyer/outside during and after dismissal
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures; report all unsafe activities to supervisor.
  • Administer site consequences in behavior tracking system and communicate with involved staff members.
    • Follow the PIRRfect Flight in common areas for behavioral expectations, including:
    • Bathrooms, Cafeteria, Entering/Exit the building, hallways, and the front office.
  • Report level 2 and above behaviors as outlined in the Code of Conduct to the Dean of Students and/or Assistant Principal immediately and document as a Referral in the behavior tracking system.
  • Report any social/emotional behaviors that are of concern to the school counselor and/or Assistant Principal.
Maintain clear and accurate records
  • Maintain a record of student progress by logging behavioral interventions such as level 1
behaviors and Golden Feather comments in the Behavior Tracking System.
  • Maintain a record of student progress through a Check In/Check Out system for specific students and behaviors.
  • Participate in kid talk meetings and collaborate with shared document prior to the meeting
Provide ongoing support
  • Work cooperatively with building administrators to promote positive student behavior through proactive and strategic moves that target research based strategies and modeling of instructional practices to support teachers
  • implementation of behavioral consequences and positive behavior supports in their classrooms
  • Knowledge and application of the Tapestry Code of Conduct and Behavior Tracking System use
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve district, building, departmental and/or grade level goals.
School-wide Duties
  • Assist with arrival, dismissal & lunch duties when needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Weekly meeting with the Assistant Principal and Dean of Students
  • Set up your school calendar to reflect appointments and share with the assistant principal and principal
