Purpose Statement

The Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Custodian.

The Springfield School District is Missouri's largest public school district and has built a reputation of academic excellence based on the outstanding performance of our students and schools. About 25,000 students attend 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, 9 middle schools, 5 high schools and a variety of alternative education and choice programs.

The job of Custodian is done for the purpose/s of providing custodial services at assigned site; ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; overseeing the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and campus events; and ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner.

Essential Functions:
  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, ) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive learning environment.
  • Consults with administrative and other custodial personnel for the purpose of planning, prioritizing and scheduling custodial activities and achieving site maintenance.
  • Inspects facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition and identifying necessary repairs to facilities.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, ) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of custodial items required to properly maintain the facility.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and trainings as may be requested for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job
  • Performs minor, job related maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, replace lights, ) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items and facilities.
  • Replenishes classroom and rest room supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, ) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors for the purpose of providing information, taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, ) for the purpose of minimizing property damage and equipment loss to ensure facilities and grounds are operational and hazard free.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning including floor and carpet; basic tools for minor repairs; safety practices and procedures.

Skills are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Ability is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment.

Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: developing and maintaining positive relationships; setting high expectations for self and others; setting and monitoring progress toward goals; utilizing and offering effective feedback to continuously improve; collaborating and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders; applying critical thinking/problem solving to improve work processes; adapting to changing work priorities; and meeting deadlines and schedules.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Springfield School District and is appropriate for their position.

Terms of Employment

The terms of employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Missouri public school and Board of Education policy, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by Collective Bargaining

representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement

between SPS and that Collective Bargaining representative.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking and 25% standing.

This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
