POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an entry level position located at a bus lot or garage in which an incumbent performs tasks assisting mechanics in servicing and maintaining a variety of school vehicles and equipment. Work requires daily fueling and checking of vehicle fluid levels and assisting Trades Helpers and mechanics in performing semiskilled vehicle repair and maintenance tasks. An Automotive Service Attendant is expected to perform tasks of progressively increasing difficulty with the Automotive Trade to progress to the level of Trades Helper.

Hourly Range: $16.30 - $32.14 (external candidates may not be placed above Step 6 $21.49 due to contractual requirements)

Detailed Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Daily fueling and checking of vehicles fluid levels;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor informed of fuel storage tank levels and supplies necessary to maintain all vehicle fluid levels;
  • Orders fuel, oil, fluids and supplies as needed;
  • Repairs tires, does lubrication work, and the shuttling of vehicles and parts;
  • May assist trades helpers and mechanics by making minor adjustments and repairs in repair maintenance work on school system vehicles and equipment;
  • May assist in conducting vehicle safety and preventative maintenance inspections;
  • Carries materials, parts, tools and supplies for mechanics as needed;
  • May assist in the assembly of cooling, fuel, ignition and exhaust systems;
  • May assist in inspecting, adjusting, repairing and reconditioning brakes, differentials, transmissions, and front and rear axle assemblies;
  • May assist in performing diagnostics and tuning of electronic controlled gasoline and diesel engines using diagnostic equipment;
  • Responds to service and accident calls on disabled and damaged school system vehicles and equipment; may tow or have the vehicle towed to a school maintenance facility or vendor;
  • May assist in performing a variety of welding jobs;
  • Maintains a clean, organized and productive work area;
  • Assists in maintaining inventory and work order procedures using a computerized system; and
  • Performs related work as required.


  • Job Requirements:

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Some familiarity and knowledge of the repair, preventive maintenance practices and tools of the skilled automotive trade;
  • Some familiarity of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to make mathematical computations and tabulations;
  • Ability to work out-of-doors, coping with varying climate conditions; and
  • Possess mechanical aptitude; and in good physical condition with the ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    High School graduate, preferably with some experience as a fuel service station attendant or helper to a skilled journeyman; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications are strongly encouraged, but not required for all candidates to be given consideration to the grade of Automotive Service Attendant; possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle License (Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Passenger endorsement. Minimum of a Class A restricted preferred) with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George's County Public Schools Bulletin P-1-88, dated July 21, 1987 and Administrative Procedure 4111, dated December 1, 2015).

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
