Position Overview
The Dean of Knowledge and Curriculum will work closely with the Head of School and Lowers School Assistant Principal to provide curricular and instructional leadership in the development, implementation, coordination, and assessment of the K-6, and growing, academic program to improve student achievement and meet student, school, and state goals. In particular, the DKC will be responsible for supporting the learning loss resulting from COVID-19 disruptions. S/he will also provide direct support to Assistant Principals and teacher leaders through coaching and training.

This position reports to the Founder and Head of School.

Roles and Responsibilities

Content and Curriculum Expertise

  • Serve as resident expert by holding a deep knowledge of K-8 content, standards, instructional materials and resources.
  • Support development and implementation of Elan's vision for a classical education model for the 21st century.
  • Collaborate with team to support integration of high quality digital content to personalize learning
  • Consult with school leadership to support school decisions regarding intervention programs and strategies for struggling students, with particular focus on the needs of RTI and students with individualized education plans

Assessment and Data Analysis

  • Partner with Head of School to support Assistant Principals and teachers with implementing assessments aligned with the Common Core State Standards
  • Support/train Assistant Principals in administering and analyzing assessments to inform instruction
  • Monitor curriculum-based assessments to assess quality of implementation
  • With team, determine best practices in analyzing student assessment and instructional practice data to inform planning and strategic support

Coaching and Professional Development

  • Plan and lead professional development for teachers on best practices in teaching and learning, including the use of formative assessments and other data to inform instruction
  • Coach teachers and leaders in the use of research-based instructional strategies and best practices aligned to regional academics priorities
  • Provide regular feedback to school leadership based on observations of classroom instruction, content teams, and school-based professional development

Skills and Characteristics

  • Bachelor's Degree (required); Master's Degree (preferred)
  • Three to 5 years teaching experience with exemplary results
  • Proven track record of school-based leadership (grade level or department chair) with outstanding results
  • Curricular and instructional leadership experience
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coach teachers
  • A deep passion for social justice and equity for all children; a strong belief that all students can achieve at the highest levels regardless of demography
  • Experience working with diverse student body and staff
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making
  • Strategic thinker and proactive problem-solver
  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and build relationships across teams and schools
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to Elan's mission and values
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high quality professional development for teachers and leaders.
