About Our District

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 27,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Madison schools are committed to making this district a place where every child thrives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determines and communicates district safety policies and procedures by studying organization operations and established internal controls, conducts inspections as appropriate, reports potential hazards to appropriate departments, created and updates Standard Operating procedures and Safety manuals, coordinates and conducts training sessions for staff, students and parents as necessary.
  • Lead, direct and organize the District Safety Committee of cross functional staff working in conjunction with the appropriate District departments review facilities, trainings, communications, policies and equipment related to safety and risk management.
  • Provides support, education and training to staff to build risk awareness and avoidance within the District.
  • Manages all automobile liability, fire and property damage claims, including communications internally, with insurance carriers, claims reviews, investigations and legal representation/settlements.
  • Assists in workers compensation claims, including assisting with communications internally, with insurance carriers, claims reviews, investigations, legal representation/settlements and contracts.
  • Conducts investigations as necessary for workplace incidents, property loss exposure, or as directed.
  • Coordinates with others regarding the records of fire and other emergency drills and conducting drills when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with the School Safety Coordinator to evaluate safety and emergency preparedness through annual safety security and emergency preparedness assessment of all school and support facilities.
  • Works with the School Safety Coordinator to ensure safety compliance with federal, state and local regulations by studying existing and new requirements and overseeing and enforcing school-wide adherence to requirements.
  • Works with appropriate departments to meet operational safety needs within budget.
  • Coordinates safety planning and practice to support academic processes of each school by creatively implementing best practices in safety and emergency preparedness with proper adaptation to the environment, creativity and innovation so the process of education can be enhanced rather than impeded by safety efforts.
  • Works with the insurance companies for recommendations regarding reduction in workforce injuries. Coordinates compliance with the Employee Handbook, State, Local and Federal requirements.
  • Processes reporting and analysis of data to provide reports, evaluations and oversees opportunities for process improvements and training to departments regarding Workers Compensation, general liability and auto losses as appropriate.
  • Works with departments to meet needs of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the district.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Significant demonstrated professional work experience in a position of Risk Management.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of risk management activities such as rich identification.reduction, loss control, asset protection, employee safety, workers compensation programs, etc.
  • Ability to conduct research, collect and analyze data and prepare written and oral reports.
  • High degree of proven diplomacy, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to create and present ideas, improvements and recommendations to all levels of the organization clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to conduct training to all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Knowledge of Workers Compensation / Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) laws and requirements, safety, loss control and risk management principles.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordkeeping requirements
  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) law and requirements.
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information regarding students, staff and parents.
  • Ability to coordinate Multiple tasks simultaneously


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Risk Management, Public Relations, Business Administration or other related field or minimum of 5 years experience in Risk Management position.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification
  • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Certification
Desired Qualifications

  • Certificate of Risk Management (CRM) preferred
Working Conditions

  • This position will be required to work some evening and occasional weekend hours.
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment requiring travel to district facilities.
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for up to 8 hours at a time
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds routinely and up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as typing, food service machinery, shop machinery or other school equipment
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including computer terminals, laptops, telephone, fax, scanner, calculator/adding machine, photocopier and fax.
  • Ability to type on a keyboard or sustain prolonged visual concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see and evaluate surroundings for hazards.

  • This is a 12 month, full time position
