LEAD HEALTH AIDE (INTERIM POSITION 2021-22)

DEFINITION

Under direction of a principal or assistant principal, the lead health aides provide direct support to other health aides and coordinate community-based health efforts, in addition to performing the health aide duties assisting the nurses with the promotion and prevention of illness and injuries in district schools.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct supervision from the principal or assistant principal and nurse.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Lead Health Aide duties:

Responsible for all the duties of a Health Aide (listed below) plus:
  • Assisting district nursing team on district-wide initiatives and efforts

  • Providing direct support to health aides with geographic community

  • Coordinating community-based health service efforts

  • Supporting the training of new health aides.


  • Health Aide duties:
  • Assist with school-wide health screenings including schedules, records, materials and supplies.

  • Record health information in individual student health records; assists the nurse with record keeping and immunization records.

  • Follow up on health care referrals by the school nurse and assist families in accessing needed services.

  • Provide designated direct health care services within the individual's ability and training for students; follow up on health care referrals.

  • Maintain and update student health records such as immunization records.

  • Maintain health office, including materials, supplies and forms.

  • Administer first aid and medications to students when the nurse is unavailable.

  • Adhere to requirements of confidentiality regarding student's records; discreetly handle sensitive information pertaining to staff, parents and students.

  • Responds efficiently to requests for service and keeps principal and office staff informed of any health related problems.

  • Communicates with building principals and keeps principal informed of any health related problems. Checks district email weekly if not daily.

  • In some schools, the health aide may be assigned additional duties as assigned by principal.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    First Aid and CPR

    State and federal rules, regulations and laws pertaining to medical records and information

    Infectious diseases and immunizations

    Children with special health care needs

    Medication administration

    English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation

    Modern office procedures and methods

    Basic computer knowledge

    Principles and procedures or record keeping

    Ability to:

    Administer first aid to ill or injured children

    Perform clerical duties such as filing and copying

    Work efficiently with a service oriented attitude under stressful situations with constant interruption

    Effectively manage time and multiple responsibilities

    Independently prepare correspondence and memoranda

    Implement and maintain standard filing system

    Work independently in the absence of supervision

    Maintain confidential records and reports

    Operate and use modern office equipment including a computer and various software packages

    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

    EXPERIENCE & TRAINING GUIDELINES

    Experience:

    Related education beyond high school and experience in the health care field is preferred. Prior experience as a health aide is preferred.

    Education:

    A high diploma or equivalent. Current First Aid and CPR certification.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside. The noise level is usually moderate. Office environment; exposure to computer screens and use of a keyboard.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk and stand. Occasional lifting of 25 pounds or less. Ability to position students as needed to provide health services.

    The health aide must be able to use equipment typically found in a medical setting.

    SALARY RANGE AND DAYS WORKED

    Hourly wage range: $1.00/hour addition to health aide salary (consistent with other lead positions), depending on years of experience.

    Days worked: this is an hourly, non-exempt position, scheduled to work 185 days/year.
