Roanoke county Public Schools is currently seeking Transportation Technician positions.

Position Description/Job Summary:

The job of Transportation Technician provides mechanic services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs; performing repairs and preventive maintenance; ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards. This is a full time 12-month position, 8 hours per day (exclusive of lunch), eligible for benefits. RCPS Pay Plan - DBM Grade B22.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventive maintenance, service, and repairs as required.
  • Repair, change, balance, and inspect tires for proper condition and air pressure.
  • Operate complex, hand-held, computerized diagnostic testing equipment in order to diagnose engine and other computerized system malfunctions.
  • Repair and overhaul brakes, transmissions, clutches, differentials, steering mechanisms, front and rear axle assemblies.
  • Overhaul, tune and adjust engines using specialized and standard test equipment.
  • Repair and install hydraulic controls; checks, services and repairs other hydraulic system components including lines, pumps and cylinders.
  • Perform diverse electrical and electronic repairs, replaces lights, alternators and starters.
  • Troubleshoot and repair vehicle air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Transport vehicles to and from outside service providers.
  • Maintain vehicle bays, general shop and parts areas in a clean and orderly state.
  • Perform any other duties deemed necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the school and school system.

  • Notify supervisor or designee of absences in a timely fashion as directed.
  • Complete assigned tasks on time and accurately. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Utilize work time efficiently.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Accept change willingly.
  • Drive a school bus to substitute for bus driver, when required
  • Must be certified as a school bus driver with-in six months of employment (Training will be in-house)
  • Possess a valid Virginia State Inspection License or be eligible to obtain one in six months.
  • Demonstrate good safety habits and respond to emergency situations.
  • Exercise sound judgment in decision making.
  • Exercise positive, correct and appropriate conduct with students, staff, parents and community always.
  • Create a pleasant and professional atmosphere.
  • Practice confidentiality always.
  • Demonstrate appropriate dress, proper hygiene and personal appearance.
  • Follow school board policy and procedures.

Minimum Job Requirements/Qualifications:

Job related experience within specialized field preferred for the transportation technician position. A valid Virginia driver's license preferably a Class B CDL with school bus endorsement. A Criminal Records Check will be required. A DOE School Bus Driver Physical must be passed annually.

Education and Experience:

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent high school certificate. Must be 21 years of age and must have a valid Driver's License for 5 years. Be able to comply with a background check as required.
