Position Description:        President of St. Edward High School (starting 2022-2023 school term)

Reports to:                           Board of Trustees

Background: St. Edward High School (SEHS) is a premier private boys’ Roman Catholic college preparatory high school in Lakewood, Ohio, just west of Cleveland. The School was founded in 1949 and is operated in the tradition and charism of the Congregation of Holy Cross and sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross Midwest Province.  The School has an enrollment of 900+ students from a variety of race, economic, and religious strata, with a six-county geographic reach.

Mission: SEHS’s mission is to educate the hearts and minds of a diverse group of young men to have the competence to see and the courage to act as men of hope for the transformation of the world. 

The School is known for its strong, nurturing community that emphasizes hospitality and humility. Our work is centered around four pillars:  faith formation, excellence, relationships and servant leadership.

Position Summary: The President is the Chief Executive Officer of St. Edward High School (SEHS). The President is ultimately responsible for the School’s Catholic and Holy Cross identity, educational direction, community and public leadership, strategic direction and financial viability. The President shall ensure that the commitment to the mission and core values of SEHS and the Brothers of Holy Cross is fulfilled. The President reports to the Board of Trustees and is subject to an annual evaluation by the Board.

Primary Responsibilities:(not all-encompassing)

Catholic and Holy Cross Identity:

  • Recognize and be responsible for relationship building as a precept for leading the school community to create a dynamic and faith-filled learning environment that reflects the Holy Cross (charisms) values of excellence, hospitality, service, justice and compassion.
  • Models and promotes the expression of Catholic identity in all facets of school life in collaboration with the Principal, the VP of Mission Effectiveness, the Campus Minister, and the Brothers of Holy Cross.
  • Ensures, builds upon, and periodically assesses the School's Catholic/Holy Cross cultural dimension as promoted among students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni. In accord with the Holy Cross Sponsorship Agreement, it utilizes the resources of the Brothers of Holy Cross and the services of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward University, Austin, Texas.

 

 

Strategic and Administrative Leadership:

  • Initiates and leads strategic and master planning for SEHS, including envisioning supportive facilities, essential for programming and staffing and attaching a high-level financial plan to such efforts.
  • Has authority over hiring, assessment, development and retention of all personnel and specifically will supervise the Principal, Vice President of Finance and Business Affairs, Vice President of Mission Effectiveness, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Vice President of Admission and Marketing, and Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Leads in close collaboration with these administrators and shall delegate responsibility and authority to ensure effective policy execution and adherence to the School mission, core values and strategic plan.

Education:

  • In conjunction with the Principal
  • Set target efforts with strategic schools to maintain a strong feeder program.
  • Support, encourage and contribute to continuous educational improvement through leading-edge program initiatives that differentiate SEHS (e.g. film studies, data analytics, entrepreneurship, etc.)
  • Continued development of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and maintain the edge as the premier IB program in the State of Ohio.

Board of Trustees:

  • Reports to the Board of Trustees on the state of the school prior to regularly scheduled Board meetings and communicates progress on short and long-term goals consistent with the School’s Strategic Plan.
  • In collaboration with the Board Chair, decides issues to be considered by the Board and ensures the timely preparation of materials to be distributed to appropriate committees and to the Board.
  • Is a non-voting member of the Board of Trustees and serves as an ex-officio member of all Board committees.

Community and Public Leadership:

  • Acts as the chief representative of the School to the outside community in community affairs, public relations and media contacts and as such exhibits a positive professional image.
  • Shares the School’s mission and educational vision through a strong marketing program within the broader community.
  • Fosters a working relationship with membership organizations (National Association of Independent Schools, Ohio Catholic Conference, Independent Schools Association of the Central States, etc.)

Financial Management:

  • In conjunction with the Board of Trustees, ensures the effective safeguarding of the School’s assets.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Finance and Business Affairs, is responsible for long and short-range financial planning and operating budgets.
  • Pursuant to the school bylaws and directives of the Board of Directors, approves expenditures beyond those already provided for in the approved budget.

 

Institutional Advancement:

  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement:
  • Establishes and implements a detailed development plan consistent with the Strategic Plan to meet the present and future needs of SEHS.
  • Has an understanding of and involvement in all aspects of capital campaigns and articulates the purpose of the campaign while cultivating significant donors for the school.
  • Lead the effort to significantly boost the endowment through an effective planned giving program and other initiatives that will ensure a healthy and growing endowment.

  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Admission and Marketing:
  • Establishes and implements an admissions program that will attract and retain those students best served by SEHS.
  • Is actively involved in the recruitment of SEHS students.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion:

  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion:
  • Continue to develop programs and policies to ensure SEHS continues to develop as a community that is committed to equity and inclusion.
  • Continue to establish a leadership position through our work with Cultural Humility.

Desired Qualities and Characteristics:

  • Understands Catholic teachings and is in communion with the Church, and is a faith-filled, Christ-centered servant leader who embraces, models, and champions the traditions and values of Catholic education while promoting a strong and vibrant Catholic identity.
  • Must embody and promote the mission, values and traditions of the Brothers of Holy Cross.
  • Has a proven track record of achievement in development, sales or other business / institutional development.
  • Demonstrated capacity for broad institutional leadership (can be obtained through a variety of career paths including: education, non-profit or corporate career tracks). Instructional and executive administrative experience in a Catholic college preparatory environment is preferred.
  • Preferred advanced degree in an education or business-related field with a full understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Catholic education.
  • Proven visionary leader with experience in strategic planning and implementation, fiscal management, donor cultivation, and school program oversight.
  • Has the desire, energy and professionalism to lead a school that enjoys a reputation for excellence in the academic and spiritual development of students.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills while serving as the highly visible public face of the SEHS community in building constructive relationships with all stakeholders that inspire crucial support in its fundraising and enrollment growth initiatives.
  • Inspirational, humble, and authentic mentor who motivates and instills leadership in others.
  • Able to establish immediate rapport and trust with students, faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, parents, and alumni communities.
