Position Description
Title: Middle School Teacher (6th - 8th)
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Principal, Assistant Principal
Compensation: Salary based on degrees and experience /40 hours per week
Pay Frequency: Bi-Weekly
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Benefit Status: Eligible for all employee benefits
Start Date: August 2021
End Date: June 2022
St. Thomas the Apostle School is a Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese of Chicago, located in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. The mission of St. Thomas the Apostle School is to lead, challenge, and encourage God's children in extraordinary variety to grow in faith, knowledge, and a commitment to service. The elementary teacher supports this mission by creating a classroom culture of learning and inclusive, develops age appropriate lesson plans aligned to Common Core Standards and using best practices, collaborates with fellow faculty members, and collaborates with parents on a regular basis.
Responsibilities
- Design and follow a complete teaching plan
- Teaches curriculum (using the CCSS and Archdiocese priority standards) along with personal, social and emotional skills
- Supports homeroom students with their transition into their grade level, and serves as a point of contact for families
- Organize learning material and resources
- Use a variety of activities and instructional methods (videos, stories, media, structured games, art, outdoor activities etc) to motivate and stimulate student's abilities
- Maintain an open line of communication with parents and provide appropriate information
- Assess students performance and progress to ensure they are mastering the skills on regular basis
- Monitor children's interactions and nurture cooperation and sharing
- Cooperate with administration staff
- Follow and comply with teaching standards and safety regulations
Skills
- Proven working experience as a teacher or teacher aide
- Excellent knowledge of child development and latest education theories and practices
- Creative and artistic teaching abilities
- Teaching and organisation skills
- Patience and flexibility
- Strong communication skills
- Keep abreast with the latest trends and best practices
- BA degree in education or relevant licence/certificate
