GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Nursing Coordinator will monitor and coordinate healthcare needs for individuals and students while participating in school and day services.
The Nurse Coordinator is expected to manage and delegate work to the nursing team, ensuring the specific skills of the nurse are used to assess, plan and deliver care to meet the health needs students and individuals receiving services. The Nurse Coordinator will be accountable for all clinical and school related compliance requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Management Responsibilities
  • Supervises and guides nursing staff.
  • Participates in the selection process of new hires.
  • Disciplines, trains and assigns subordinates.
  • Establishes and appraises performance levels of subordinates.
  • Monitors compliance with on-site policies and procedures pertaining to, but not limited to: incident reporting, quality assurance regulations, fire safety, and employee conduct.
  • Constantly maintains high professional standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interactions with other staff, individuals, and outside agencies.
  • Organizes, conducts and participates in staff meetings, in-service events, etc.
  • Provides for staff development and training, including new hire orientation.
  • Participates in professional development and community and inter-agency committees to remain current on changing trends and program requirements.
  • Provides consultation, supervision, and instruction to staff through individual and group conferences in order to assist staff in development of service skills.
  • Participates in the development of Agency policies and procedures in conjunction with the Director of Education
  • Serves as a member of the General Leadership team, attention required team meetings as scheduled.
  • Reviews and approves subordinate timecards and time off requests.
Nursing Duties
  • Ensures the overall health and safety needs of the students and adults we serve as defined in the IEP and Day Habilitation Service plan are being met.
  • Ensure robust systems are in place for selection, mentorship, appraisal, performance management, clinical and safeguarding supervision, training and development of the nursing team.
  • Initiates and lead discussions within the team which enables the team to take responsibility for solving problems and making decisions. To lead, maintain and enhance effective team work.
  • Demonstrates expert skills in School Nursing and clinical leadership, advising colleagues on clinical intervention and safe practice.
  • Identify, prioritize and implement health/medical protocols that meet the needs of the school age and adult population and are in accordance with IEP/IFSP/ISP mandates.
  • Oversees the department's daily staffing requirements; orients clinical staff to their job responsibilities; and provides leadership in clinical problem solving.
  • Leads the recruitment of the nursing team.
  • Prepares the nursing department's fiscal budget.
  • Ensures department activities and records are in adherence to various licensing and regulatory requirements; maintains clinical skill and knowledge necessary to set standards and work in clinical areas of nursing; assists with patient examinations and/or questions.
  • Identifies problems associated with clinical practice and undertakes resolutions in collaboration with the Director of Education and Director of Day Services
  • Services as nursing liaison to Executive Director, division Directors, and/or Human Resources Director on strategic and planning efforts.
  • Acts as a key resource and medical liaison to District CSEs when student medical needs are in question.
  • Provides appropriate first aid to students and staff.
  • Studies, amends and develops nursing policies and procedures.
  • Generates data and analysis; writes reports.
  • Constantly maintains high professional standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interactions with other staff and families.
  • Directs, supervises and evaluates nurses in performance of their duties.
  • Ensure that the nursing office is appropriately stocked and all medical procedures effectively carried out.
  • Generates, organizes and keeps record of student and adult medical protocols.
  • Trains instructional and non-instructional staff on medical protocols and medical process (e.g. epi pen administration) as needed.
  • Ensures that the health office is neat, orderly, and conducive to providing first-rate services to those in need.
  • Conduct staff training to include CPR, First Aid and other required health related in-services.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Extensive nursing knowledge of medication administration, infection control procedures, universal precaution controls, and nursing procedures.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to triage individuals
  • Knowledge of computers including word processing and agency databases
  • Attentiveness to detail
  • Ability to prioritize duties and delegate responsibilities
  • Ability to use protective equipment and respond to emergency situations
  • Ability to function independently
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing; current New York RN licensure required. Minimum of five years supervisory experience.
  • Willingness to become CPR and First Aid trainer certified
