This is a pool posting for Literacy Coaches at the secondary level with VBCPS. All qualified applicants will be screened by the Department of Teaching and Learning.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is seeking qualified applicants for secondary (grades 6-12) literacy coach positions. Individuals with at least five years of teaching experience where literacy and literacy instruction (reading and writing) where critical components to the classroom is preferred. The role of a literacy coach includes, but is not limited to: assisting school administrators and teachers with implementing best literacy and instructional practices to improve student achievement in all content areas; assisting teachers with analysis of data, working collaboratively with teachers to improve or enhance classroom instruction through PLC meetings, coaching cycles, modeling instruction and best practice, and planning and assessment. Coaches should have the capacity to build positive relationships with staff as well as encourage and support instructional change through teacher and classroom observations, coaching conversations, the development of professional learning opportunities and facilitation of professional development at the school and division level. Secondary literacy coaches must exhibit leadership skills and the capacity to work collaboratively with teachers and administrators in their own building and across the division to support the literacy development of all learners and schools in VBCPS.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Under direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community. Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of VBCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, VBCPS policies and effective instructional practices; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community; excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
