Description: The Communication Specialist is responsible for organizing and implementing bilingual communication efforts on behalf of the district by coordinating communication to internal and external audiences using a wide variety of materials and channels in support of the district's strategic plan and mission.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct supervision from the Public Information Officer and works with the executive team to coordinate communication on behalf of the district.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

District-Level Communication
  • Revise the district's communication plan annually in collaboration with the public information officer and school communication leads, and implement plan to achieve identified outcomes.

  • Coordinate, write, edit and distribute information for district staff and parent newsletters.

  • Manage, write, and coordinate content on the district's website and provide website support to schools.

  • Manage the district's social media accounts and provide support to schools.

  • Design flyers, brochures, or other graphics for district initiatives, events, and information campaigns.

  • Photographs and/or videos district staff, programs, and events for publications and other uses.

  • Serve on and support the district-wide communication leads team.

  • Serve as the designated translation specialist and bilingual spokesperson for district crisis and emergency communications

  • Provide information and support for public events such as community forums and district ceremonies.

  • Provide communication support to departments and schools.


  • Bilingual Communication
  • Build capacity both internally and externally to implement the district's bilingual communication plan to address the diverse needs of underrepresented family populations across the district,

  • Provide insight on how district communication efforts can best support diversity, inclusion and equity


  • Media Relations
  • Serve as a district spokesperson and assist the press with developing stories and organizing media site visits, especially for Spanish media outlets,

  • Write, edit and distribute information to media outlets through routine press releases, newspaper inserts, or advertisements.


  • Board of Education and District Committees
  • Provide interpretation for and translation of all materials for district meetings, including Board of Education, District Accountability Committee, and other district events, presentation, and meetings.

  • Coordinate and attend all Board meetings; ensure that minutes are taken and follow-up assignments are completed.


  • Policies and Records Management
  • Update Athletic Policy Handbooks; arrange for accurate translation into Spanish.

  • Update Behavior Policy Handbooks, ensuring all policies required by law are incorporated into handbook, arrange for accurate translation into Spanish


  • Special Projects
  • Coordinate graduation inserts for every high school

  • Coordinate informational campaigns for district elections, kindergarten registration, and other recurring events.

  • Other special projects as assigned.


  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish; ability to write and publish concise copy in a fast-paced environment; strong proofreading/editing skills.

    • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and presentation skills; ability to function effectively as part of a team;

    • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.

    • Ability to speak in public and deliver presentations to internal and diverse external audiences.

    • Ability to translate and interpret faithfully, always conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the speaker while maintaining confidentiality, an impartial attitude, and professional demeanor at all times.

    • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

    • Ability to collaborate with staff and all district departments on various projects.

    • Experience managing web platforms including content management systems

    • Experience managing social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

    • Experience professional video editing, photo editing, and design software

    • Graphic design principles and techniques

    • Ability to work a flexible schedule to attend after-hour events and assist during emergency situations.

    • Ability to frequently travel among district facilities and into the community


    EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION/TRAINING GUIDELINES

    Education, Experience, and Training
    • Bilingual in Spanish required.

    • Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, community engagement or related field. Four (4) additional years of relevant experience in translation/interpretation or community engagement may be substituted for this requirement.

    • Minimum of one (1) year of previous experience in translation/interpretation required.

    • Three (3) years of translation/interpretation experience in an educational setting preferred.


    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Office environment; exposure to computer screens. Travel to different sites for meetings and/or function and working irregular hours when needed, including evenings.

    Physical Conditions: Primary functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of times; use of computer keyboard and attending night meetings.

    SALARY RANGE AND DAYS WORKED

    Salary range: $56,000 to $65,000, depending on education and years of experience.

    Days worked: this is an exempt, year-round position, scheduled to work 252 days/year.
