Minimal Qualifications:
Virginia Collegiate Professional, Post-Graduate Professional, or a Technical Professional license with the appropriate endorsement in one of the following- Practical Nursing, Nurse Aide, Health and Medical Science or the ability to obtain licensure.
Position Description:
The health and medical science teacher provides instruction using the VDOE approved mental health and health assistant careers curriculum. The mental health careers curriculum provides students with classroom instruction and hands-on learning in preparation for a career as a mental health technician or in the mental health field. Students gain understanding of routine care and therapeutic procedures, responding to emergencies, patient rehabilitation, and patient recreational activities. Students prepare to assist physicians, therapists, and other mental health professionals in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and community mental health facilities.
Following the health assistant careers curriculum, students explore opportunities in the healthcare field by developing basic skills common to several assisting careers. They study body structure and function, principles of health and disease, and an overview of the health and patient care system. Supervised work-based learning may be part of the course in health care settings and is managed by the health and medical sciences education teacher.
Essential Duties:
-Utilizes the curriculum guide of the school in organizing instructional plans
-Secures and prepares instructional materials in advance and shows written evidence of preparation
-Utilizes multimedia and community resources
-Provides classroom and clinical instruction for assigned students
-Demonstrates a knowledge of subject matter
-Diagnoses and develops plans for the learning problems of students appropriate to the level of achievement
-Evaluates progress in classroom and laboratory by observation and testing
-Implements all curriculum programs adopted system wide in a positive and efficient manner
-Establishes clear objectives for all learning experiences and communicates these objectives to students
-Makes use of a variety of resources, materials, and methods in an effort to improve the effectiveness of instruction
-Keeps students informed of progress
-Keeps required records for student files
-Shares information about student progress with coordinator, faculty, and parents as applicable
-Returns materials to their assigned place or designated personnel promptly after use
-Emphasizes and enforces safety factors within the classroom, building, and throughout school property
-Acts as a role model for students
-Serves as an advisor for HOSA
-Maintains a practice of good housekeeping for self and students to improve the learning environment
-Cooperates with administrative and supervisory staff in the evaluation process
-Performs other duties as assigned
-Performs other related duties as requested.

Qualifications
-Graduate from a state accredited school of nursing
-Currently hold an unrestricted Virginia license or multi-state license privilege as a Registered Nurse.
-Bachelor's degree in nursing required
-Master's degree and teaching license are preferred
-Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience as a registered nurse within the last five years and at least one year of direct client care or supervisory experience in the provision of geriatric long-term care services are required
