THIS IS A 1.0 FTE POSITION.

LOCATION: Daniel is an elementary school of approximately 540 students and 80 staff. Daniel
opened in 1992 and has become more and more diverse each year. Located on East
Hill Kent, Daniel Elementary serves approximately twenty apartment complexes. Staff take pride
in serving our diverse population. Over 50% of the Daniel students are English Language
Learners, including several refugee students, and over 70% of our students qualify for
free/reduced lunch.
Daniel teachers participate in Professional Learning Communities to engage in
discussions centered on instructional improvement in order to meet our goal of eliminating the
achievement gap. Our staff work collaboratively to support students and are implementing the
Positive Behavior Intervention Supports by adopting school-wide expectations for students and
adults. Our students support one another through peer tutoring and cross-grade buddy
programs. Parent Engagement efforts have increased parent involvement via the Watch
D.O.G.S. program, parent nights and the newly formed Parent Teacher Student Association.

PRIMARY PURPOSE :

The purpose of this position is to support students through our multi-tiered system of support for literacy, train staff members in literacy instructional skills and to provide literacy leadership at the school level.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Facilitates alignment of student literacy standards with school practices and curriculum.

Provides small group student instruction on topics related to literacy enhancement procedures and practices.

Develops instructional ideas, suggestions, and programs that will help teachers meet standards for literacy.

Keeps abreast of state and district literacy instructional processes and programs in order to communicate and assist teachers in using appropriate instructional tools.

Provides model teaching (student instruction with classroom teacher present); co-teaches lessons with classroom teachers; supports classroom teacher while s/he teaches a literacy-enhanced lesson; peer coaches classroom teachers; assists classroom teachers in planning literacy-enhanced lessons and projects.

Coordinates and/or teaches literacy-related building staff development sessions.

Prepares written documentation to assist staff with literacy instruction.

Manages student data for K-3 reading assessments.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Participates in budget decisions.

Serves on committees and works on special projects.

Serves as member of the instructional team of the school and district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS :

Reports to the principal or other administrator. Interacts daily with teachers and students; maintains cordial and cooperative working relationships with colleagues, parents, administrators, and other district staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

The daily instructional activities are typically performed in a classroom setting or in a pullout model with small groups of students. There is a high level of interaction with teachers and students. The work may require moving, lifting, and storing of materials and equipment. Frequent interruptions occur; visual and mental concentration on details and precision is required. The employee may be exposed to infectious diseases and biohazards.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and completion of an accredited teacher training program as determined by the Washington State Department of Education; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the work and to meet certification requirements.

Licensing and Certification

Valid Washington State teacher's certificate with appropriate endorsements.
