QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Valid Iowa Teaching Certificate.
  2. BA required, MA preferred. Chemistry as a major area of study.
  3. Endorsement in Chemistry (others as requested).
  4. Teaching experience preferred.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Assistant Principal

SUPERVISES: n/a

JOB GOALS:
  1. To motivate each student to actively engage in understanding the world around them by learning about scientific and engineering principles and applying those principles to scientific inquiry and engineering design.
  2. Promote the overall efficiency of the school system and maximize the opportunities available to each child.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Teach the skills and knowledge necessary for secondary students to engage in scientific inquiry by utilizing the Course of Study adopted by the Board of Directors of the Iowa City Community School District.
  2. Adapt curricular materials and instructional methods to develop relevant learning experiences that guide and challenge students.
  3. Implement an instructional program that utilizes various instructional methods including demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and hands-on experiments.
  4. Establish clear objectives for lessons and units and communicate those objectives to the students.
  5. Instruct students in proper care, use and safe handling of scientific materials and equipment.
  6. Provide safe storage and proper use of chemicals, materials, equipment and tools.
  7. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe and productive learning environment.
  8. Maintain accurate, complete records of student attendance and progress and communicate that information with parents and counselors.
  9. Provide students with immediate, specific feedback regarding their academic progress.
  10. Identify student needs and cooperate with other staff members to help meet those needs.
  11. Attend staff meetings and in-service activities as required.
  12. Continue to grow as a professional by participating in various professional growth opportunities.
  13. Communicate policies in the district's instructional program to parents and the community as needed.
  14. Fulfil conditions of employment outlined in the negotiated agreement.
  15. Assume additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the principal.
  16. Other duties as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 184/186 Contract Days. Salary and calendar year to be established by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District's policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
