LOCATION: Kentridge Senior High School

Kentridge High School has a student population of 2,175 and is located in the northeast corner of the district. The school is noted for its strong emphasis on academics and co-curricular activities, and enjoys strong community support.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is part of the KEA bargaining unit. The status of this continuing position may be changed due to special circumstances.

ASSIGNMENT: The purpose of this position is to provide academic and personal guidance to all assigned students. Responsibilities will be to provide educational, vocational, and personal counseling to students through group guidance and individual counseling activities; coordinate or assist in the school's standardized testing program and interprets test results to teachers, students, and parents; consult with parents regarding the family's role in supporting the academic needs of individual students; participate in the orientation of students to the next higher grade level and to post high school placement; coordinate the process for identification and referral of students with the appropriate district personnel; consult with the student support services team, building staff, and district administration with respect to development of curriculum, the master schedule, and classroom activities to meet the personal and academic needs of the students; coordinate the effort necessary for the referral of families to special in-district and out-of-district services; and promote and communicate the counseling and guidance program of the district to students, staff, parents, and community. Other duties may include initiating parent, teacher, and student conferences involving issues of poor academic performance, discipline, and/or substance abuse; coordinating and participating in school-wide registration, new student enrollment, and class changes for grades 9 through 12; monitoring classification, credits, progress, and graduation requirements/status of students; maintaining adequate student and office records for each student; participating in research activities designed to improve the school program in accordance with established district policies and regulations; serving on a variety of committees and works on special projects as assigned; serving as member of the counseling team of the school and district; and performing related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's degree in guidance and counseling or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work and to meet certification requirements.
  2. Valid Washington State certificate as a school counselor, ESA endorsement required and must be on file prior to beginning work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. ELL endorsement.
  2. Knowledge of guidance and counseling principles, practices, and techniques.
  3. Knowledge of the concerns, problems, and issues important to students.
  4. Knowledge of rules, regulations, and polices pertaining to the counseling of students.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Ability to analyze and synthesize data.
  7. Ability to produce accurate records and reports.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, other employees, and others as needed.
  9. Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
  10. Experience working with secondary students.
  11. Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics
  12.
