  • The Archdiocese of Chicago is the third largest diocese in the United States and serves more than 2.2 million Catholics in 347 parishes in Cook and Lake Counties.     The Archdiocese of Chicago, under Cardinal Cupich's leadership, has launched a multi-year Church renewal effort ("Renew My Church") to engage people in their faith lives, establish more vibrant parish communities and inspire service in our local communities. To accomplish these objectives, the Cardinal is also transforming the Pastoral Center, the central administrative operation of the Archdiocese, by building a team of highly-qualified professionals dedicated to the mission of the Catholic Church in Chicago.

    The Archdiocese recently completed a significant successful financial improvement effort and is now looking to build long-term professional finance operation and organization. The Manager, Insurance & Risk position requires an experienced strategic leader who can also operate as a working functional leader. The position will report to the Chief Financial Officer.

    Position Overview

    Responsible for the development of cost-effective risk management programs which eliminate or reduce the financial impact of losses in all operational areas related to property, liability and worker's compensation coverages and for advising and educating the Archdiocese of Chicago (Archdiocese) and management personnel regarding their vulnerability to loss.

    Manage an approximately $40 million budget for property and casualty exposure (1/3 program expenses and 2/3 claims expense) of the diverse operations of the Archdiocese of Chicago, with more than 15,000 employees and $13 billion total insured value covered under the insurance programs.

    Responsible for overseeing Third Party Administrator services for claims management and loss control. Advises and educates Archdiocese management and staff regarding loss exposures and loss control initiatives.

    Responsibilities:

    • Design, implement, and manage loss control program and coordinate recommendations to all Diocesan Agencies. Advise and educate Archdiocese management and staff regarding loss exposures and loss control initiatives.
    • Manage all property, general liability, and worker's compensation insurance programs, both self-insured and excess insurance, including the setting of appropriate limits and coverages, marketing insurance renewals for competitive bidding where necessary, and investigating, negotiating, and managing insurance claims.
    • Purchase all property, liability, and worker's compensation insurance programs.
    • Review proposed contracts for all areas of insurance coverage and recommend changes in coverage and terms as necessary. Develop standard insurance clauses to be used in all contracts with modifications where necessary to meet local requirements, when possible.
    • Direct and manage insurance brokers and Third-Party Administrator services for claims management and loss control.
    • Coordinate property claims services with site evaluations by Planning and Construction department.
    • Determine annual allocation of total cost of risk to all Diocesan Agencies.
    • Serve as an insurance liaison between all Diocesan Agencies (Parishes, etc.) and the Archdiocese.
    • Educate all Diocesan Agencies regarding insurance coverage and regarding loss control initiatives.
    • Design, implement and manage systems for effective claims handling with consideration given to reporting procedures, investigation, evaluation, reserving and recording practices to control "cost of loss".
    • Develop dynamic exposure database to incorporate changes in parish configuration as well as changes in insured property.
    • Supervise third-party claims administrator to insure satisfactory levels of service, most favorable outcomes, suitable reserving, and management reporting.
    • Monitor status of all claims and potential claims both as to exposure and incurred costs.
    • Develop, prepare and present financial and departmental reports to management. Analyze and report on claim trends.
    • Develop annual budget and evaluate impact of quarterly results.
    • Work with regulatory agencies to maintain self-insurer privileges.
    • Provide exposure information to actuary and determine budgetary impacts of actuary's reports.

    Requirements:
    • 10-15 years relevant experience
    • Undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Risk Management
    • Desired Certifications: Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or other applicable designation.
    • Comprehensive understanding of claims management and processes.
    • MBA is strongly preferred.
    • Prior NFP and/or religious organization experience is preferred
    • Computer and Software Skills: Advanced Microsoft Office user; familiarity with RMIS
    • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills
    • Strong leadership and initiative-taking ability to assume independence and suggest opportunities for continual improvement
    • Strong strategic thinking and ability to synthesize data and information into key messages, implications and recommended actions.
    • Strong interpersonal skills-ability to lead meetings with senior staff and build confidence and trust
    • Experience envisioning and delivering transformational changes for operations and organizations. Comfortable with high change environments and turnaround environments.
    • Strong ability to set priorities in a complex environment and manage resources to meet priority goals and objectives.
    • Strong detail orientation and willingness to engage in detail as necessary, without sacrificing the overall perspective.
