Great Oaks Americorps Fellows provide students with additional opportunities to engage in critical content, which helps to close academic achievement gaps and level the playing field. In addition to providing daily content tutoring and mentorship, a small percentage of Fellows are also enrolled in the Great Oaks Teacher Residency. About Great Oaks Charter School - Bridgeport

Great Oaks (GO) Charter School - Bridgeport opened in the Fall of 2014 and has a focus on serving students who are English Language Learners. In the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, Great Oaks - Bridgeport will serve grades 6th through 12th.

Position Summary

The Great Oaks Fellowship is a key component of the identity of Great Oaks Charter Schools. The GO Fellow Manager is a leadership position within the school that supports in managing the cadre of Fellows inclusive of setting and maintaining a positive GO Fellow culture. The successful candidate will be driven to shape new college graduates into effective educators. S/he will also be mission driven, adaptable and a have a collaborative team mindset.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

Develop opportunities for and directly supervise Fellows' day-to-day secondary responsibilities to Help Develop a Community:
  • Develop strategies for secondary responsibilities and present to the Director of Intervention and Curriculum and other members of the school leadership team to assign and oversee secondary duties that directly impact students. These duties may include providing in-class or curriculum support, organizing or leading after school clubs and sports programming, participating in Saturday Academy, or working with our operations or culture teams.
    • These Fellow duties also include morning entry and afternoon exit, being present in the hallways during student transitions, engaging with students during lunch, supporting during school based events, and generally being an active and present member in the school community,
    • Ensure that all Fellows' secondary duties are specific and measurable.
  • Partner with community based organizations to establish opportunities for Fellows to serve outside of the school.

Assist in the supervision of Fellows' day-to-day primary responsibilities to Instruct for Mastery and Mentor for Leadership:
  • Assist in the management and supervision of daily small group tutorials (instruct) provided by Fellows in math and English Language Arts and supervise weekly goal-setting and coaching meetings (mentor) provided by Fellows and focused on student academic and social-emotional growth.
    • Ensure that Fellows have the necessary resources they need (curriculum, computers, space etc.) to deliver effective tutorial, goal-setting, and coaching sessions.
    • Provide feedback on how well Fellows are prepared for tutorial, goal-setting, and coaching sessions and coach Fellows to use their planning time effectively when necessary.
  • Work closely with teachers and members of school leadership to ensure that the GO Fellows are meeting the needs of students by analyzing student growth and achievement data.

Foster and hold Fellows and Fellow Leads accountable to high standards by observing, evaluating, and providing actionable feedback using the Great Oaks Instruct, Mentor, Develop Rubric and student achievement data analyses.
  • Generally support Fellow Leads and Fellows to acclimate to the Great Oaks school culture and procedures, and to hold students accountable to expectations when necessary.
  • Assist with the Instruct for Mastery domain to improve members Instructional Preparation , Instructional Practice , Delivery of Instruction , and Analysis & Differentiation as are described in the rubric.
  • Prioritize the Mentor for Leadership domain to improve members Professional Relationship Building , Behavior Management , Coaching & Motivating , and Leveraging Family Support as are described in the rubric.
  • Prioritize the Develop a Community domain to improve members Respect , Service , Professionalism , Growth , and Teamwork as are described in the rubric.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Intervention and Curriculum to identify and organize professional growth opportunities for Fellow Leads and Fellows.
  • Coach Fellow Leads to increasingly take on day-to-day GO Fellow management/authority.

Participate in the selection process and engage prospective GO Fellows by:
  • Provide outreach to community based organizations to share information about the GO Fellows and Great Oaks Charter Schools
  • Conduct In-person or Skype interviews and review work product tasks associated with a prospective Fellow's application and complete interview evaluations electronically.
  • Proactively communicate with Fellows who have accepted the offer to join the GO Fellows to keep them engaged and to prepare them for the start of their GO Fellow experience.
  • Support the Director of Curriculum and Interventions in coordinating with the Foundation on the recruitment process: interviewing, hiring, and communicating with selected candidates.

Competencies and Qualifications

The successful candidate will be an experienced educational leader, with proven success in an academic or non-profit setting. They will bring the ability to deliver outstanding outcomes and will possess exceptional relationship building skills and the ability to communicate clearly to multiple stakeholders. The successful candidate will also bring some or all of the following:
  • Familiarity with K-12 education
  • Experience working with urban, underserved youth
  • Experience working with AmeriCorps
  • Previous management experience preferred
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • Prior experience with tutoring or mentoring or teacher education preferred
  • Experience leading adults - through professional development, director supervision or coordination of key efforts
  • Self confidence, flexibility and the ability to respond well to feedback
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Impact-oriented and a belief that all students can succeed
  • Highly collaborative
  • Strong project management and team management skills. Superb organizational and self-management skills and an ability to handle multiple responsibilities effectively and thoughtfully.
  • Awareness of and comfort with issues of diversity, specifically around race, class, and gender; ability to engage in and facilitate discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • The ability to thrive in a fast paced environment where the ability to multitask and prioritize work is essential
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written; ability to provide constructive feedback to staff members.
  • A do-whatever-it takes attitude doing whatever is necessary to help all students achieve academic success including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening.

Compensation

Great Oaks provides a competitive compensation and benefits package; exact compensation will vary based on experience and education.

General Information

This position is for the 2021-2022 school year and the successful candidate will start in the beginning of August 2021. Selected candidates will be contacted to discuss the hiring process. Please be aware that Great Oaks Charter School operates Monday through Friday with expected hours to be between 7:15 and 3:45 pm.
