POSITION SUMMARY:

The Instructional Director for High Schools and Alternative Schools is an executive level position that works directly with the principals of schools that are divided into areas. Their responsibilities include building the capacity of principals to improve the conditions of teaching and learning in each area. An administrator in this class is responsible for articulating the school system's mission, goals, accomplishments, needs, and strategies to their area schools and communities.

Salary Range: $117,617 - $199,977

Detailed Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Leading and supervising an area of schools and all personnel assigned to that area;
  • Assisting principals and school teams with the development, implementation, and monitoring of school improvement plans;
  • Ensuring coherence within the strategic plan, school plan, student learning objectives, and performance goals; Establishing an action plan and utilizing coaching techniques that will guide principals in the continuous improvement process and facilitate a structure for reflective practice;
  • Conducting gap analysis/needs assessments against system and school-based targets;
  • Serving as a liaison between the Associate Superintendent and the area;
  • Building instructional leadership of principals with particular focus on instruction, data analysis, intervention and developing capacity;
  • Assessing the culture of schools to determine readiness of school structures to use data to help school teams become accountable to each other and the students they serve;
  • Collaborating with departments to provide the appropriate system resources that address the needs of schools;
  • Evaluating principals;
  • Responding to parent/community concerns and directing these concerns to appropriate offices;
  • Attending two (2) PTSA meetings per school year for assigned schools;
  • Advocating for and informing the coherence or organization vision, policies and strategies to support schools and student learning;
  • Engaging in development and continuous improvement to help principals grow as instructional leaders;
  • Leading strategic change that continuously elevates the performance of schools and sustains high-quality educational programs and opportunities across the district;
  • Serving on Central Office Committees as assigned; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Public School Laws of Maryland, the bylaws of the State Board of Education, and the policies of the Board of Education of Prince George's County; thorough understanding of curriculum and instruction and other pupil related services;
  • Ability to use computer technology in an administrative and educational setting;
  • Excellent organizational ability and good human relation skills;
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills as well as problem solving and consensus building expertise; and
  • High school and/or Alternative school principal leadership experience required.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Master's degree (Doctorate preferred) from an accredited college or university with course work in educational administration, education, and curriculum development. Successful leadership serving as a principal of an early childhood center, elementary, middle, or high school required.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrative II or Principal/Supervisory Certification, with Superintendent Endorsement preferred.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Oversees and provides guidance to area personnel.
